I enjoyed the re-read a lot more. Probably from having read more Bechdel. But I enjoy the solipsistic parts that are essentially what became her later ouvre more than the stuff about her father. But still, much more engaging than I remembered.

A great graphic novel is that rare thing where not only does the story itself have to be well-told and compelling, but the illustrations themselves must accompany, complement, and provide emphasis and context, allowing the words themselves to be elevated above their fixed static meanings. All this is to say that I'm extremely glad to have experienced this pioneering work and my expectations from the existing praises were well met.

This is one of those books where it feels weird to say that I enjoyed or liked it (it's someone's life!) Reading this was a tense affair, fraught yet also humbling to witness Bechdel's ability to be open and raw with the reader. She handles the tension expertly, winding up a storyline and letting loose a little surprise every so often before carrying on, leaving me to reread and wonder if I missed something, before picking up that thread some pages onwards. She quietly lit and fired the cannon at the start and just continued to revisit her life over and over from different perspectives and anecdotes. This is storytelling done as a 3D jigsaw puzzle while on a high-wire.

Aside: Bechdel really tricked me with that title. I had zero idea about the book itself except the title and that people called it a memoir, and she really fooled me on both counts. ( )

Come sa chi mi segue da un po', il fumetto non è un genere che frequento spesso, ma ho deciso di leggere i libri più censurati e censurabili della Book Banned Week e ci sono ben due graphic novel. Una di queste è proprio Fun Home e sono oltremodo contenta di averla incrociata. Ne consiglio la lettura soprattutto a quelle figlie che hanno un rapporto spigoloso con il proprio padre: si ritroveranno molto nelle parole di Alison Bechdel, al di là delle specificità di ogni vita ed esperienza.

Fun Home è un'autobiografia ragionata di un rapporto padre/figlia che non può sfociare nell'odio perché non c'è abbastanza dolore e non può sfociare nell'amore perché non c'è abbastanza affetto. Padre e figlia si trovano in questo limbo infernale dal quale sembra impossibile uscire perché nessuno dei due riesce ad aggirare quel muro di silenzi e incomunicabilità che hanno costruito tra di loro.

I disegni di Alison Bechdel sono estremamente “parlanti”. Nonostante non sia un libro lungo, si impiega molto tempo a leggere Fun Home proprio perché oltre alle parole è necessario leggere le immagini. Magari è consueto nelle graphic novel e io sto soltanto riferendo la scoperta dell'acqua calda, ma in ogni vignetta ci sono dei dettagli capaci di dare spessore alla narrazione e coinvolgerci nella storia.

La storia, della quale non voglio darvi alcun dettaglio perché è una di quelle che vanno scoperte pagina dopo pagina, è al contempo raccontata e analizzata. Ecco perché prima l'ho definita un'autobiografia ragionata: Alison Bechdel ci racconta la sua vita con suo padre e la analizza, in un processo che – credo – abbia fatto bene a lei e, di certo, fa bene a noi.

Gli intrecci con la letteratura e le citazioni sono molteplici – Proust, Wilde, Fitzgerald, Wallace Stevens – e aiutano a orientarsi in un mondo di non-detti e ipotesi che non necessariamente portano alla verità, ma almeno possono darci una pace e una serenità. ( )
