I love elephants and now I love them even more. ( ) The Elephant keeper starts out promisingly as a quick paced, interesting, and emotional story about the relationship between The Keeper and his two elephants Timothy & Jenny. However when Timothy exits from the story, the novel begins to deteriorate very quickly and it pretty much turns into some kind of twisted love story between the keeper and the female elephant. The Keeper has imaginary conversations with the elephant which I found to be just plain silly. And just when I thought things couldn't get any more silly, I came to the ending; which is quite frankly beyond silly. Overall, after such a great beginning, a very disappointing read. I loved this book from the first page to the very last. We follow Tom Page a young groom and now anew elephant keeper to a country estate in England and enjoy learning how to care and love these magnificent creatures as Tom creates a home for them in 18th century England. I was able to feel the kinship with the elephant the same kinship that Tom Page, the elephant keeper has. . We all inhabit the same world, animals and people. The love for elephants that this novel manifests grew in my heart as well. This novel is gentle, sweet and thought provoking. love this from a review "all told with a touch of the otherworldly elegance and wit of Babar."
The Elephant Keeper set in the 18th century is about a caretaker and his relationship with two elephants Timothy and Jenny. It's about the bond between them, the training, and the keeping. The devotion to Timothy and Jenny is charming, and engaging. From the very beginning Tom is a very likable character, though as the story progresses you begin to wonder if Tom has lost his marbles. The story gets wierd and loses momentum half way through. The "conversations" between Tom and the elephant were ridiculous, but if the author was trying to convey a love between them, well, he certainly did that. The writing was consistant with the time period. At times the story felt disjointed, but it wasn't so much so that you could get lost. Final word, The Elephant Keeper wasn't a hit, but it wasn't a miss either. I would give the author another try. Prémios
In 1766, a ship docks at Bristol, England, disgorging a crate with two young elephants in poor health, but alive. A wealthy sugar merchant purchases them for his country estate and turns their care over to a young stable boy, Tom Page. It takes time for Tom and the two elephants to understand each other, but to the surprise of everyone on the estate, a remarkable bond is formed, and changes the lives of all who meet them.
