Wordless book! I've got a grandkid falling behind in reading. I found all of Mercer Mayer's books online at Internet Archive on 8/26/2023. I would have purchased some on Amazon or Thriftbooks.com, or anywhere else, but, I actually need books with WORDS. I can't really rate this kind of book.

I like this book because I think it is the perfect book for English Language Learners and students who do not like to read. First, the entire book consists of only pictures and no word’s. This enable EL students and students who do not like to read to just focus on the pictures. It takes off the stress they have on trying to understand every word on the page. Second, since there are no words, it allows students to make up their own interpretations of the book. While one might interpret the book as creating friendships, another student might see it as taking home wild animals as pets because at the end of the book, the boy is going home with a dog, a frog, and a turtle. Third, although there are no words, the conflict faced by the young boy is still communicated to his readers. The struggle the boy had trying to get the turtle off the dog was illustrated through the drawing. This book allows readers to develop their own story based off of the journey the young boy went through. ( )

This was a funny textless picture book. This book would be great to show how friends help each other. The illustrations were done in ink and were very clear. I would use this book for social relationships between students. ( )

This time, the boy the dog and the frog go fishing in the pond. When a turtle takes his fishing pole, the three friends go after him. The turtle attacks and tragedy strikes, or so the friends think. It turns out, they have made a new friend!

Growing up, Mercer Mayer was one of my favorite story book authors. One of the best parts of these books was the comical nature of the text. That is why I was surprised to see this series of wordless books. However, they still capture the essence of his whimsical style, and are perfect for a young child who is just learning to talk. Introducing children to the concept of reading books before they even learn to do so can be a critical step in procuring this great habit.
