I think this is Flynn's best so far. I had no idea whodunit until she wanted me to! I love her characters, who are flawed and often unlikeable but very real. Excellent read. ( )

Couldn't put it down. Great voice and writing. Kept me in suspense until close to the end and I can usually figure out "whodunit" pretty quickly. I absolutely recommend it to anyone who likes a dark tale with plenty of blood, mystery, and a nice touch of humor mixed in. ( )

This is my second Flynn after Sharp Objects and fuck if she doesn't just know how to write a great mystery. Flynn makes it seem effortless. I love that just when you think you know what's going on, she throws something out at you that changes everything and you realize that you never had a fucking clue. I also love the way she writes her female protagonists, hard and angry and damaged and depressed but survivors down deep when it comes time for it. Libby was an anxious, misanthropic kleptomaniac and I loved her the entire time, even when she would have thought I was stupid for it. ( )

I enjoyed the mystery, and the writing was fantastic. I'm a big sucker for when writers write terrible women. All too often terrible women are clichés, or cardboard cutouts, rather than true characters. Flynn writes terrible, hateful, women who are still pitiful sometimes. Nuanced and understandable, but loathsome. It's fantastic.

That being said, this book is a misery conga line. I feel like it would be perfect, if only it had a few moments where things were going OK. Not even well, but just OK. As is it seems unrealistic in its endless suffering and bleakness. A world where young boys are always violent, angry and sexually frustrated. Young girls are always conniving greedy little gremlins that torment their mothers, and where adults are all useless, rude, awful people to each other and in general.

As is, it's a good read and one I'm glad I finished. But it can often feel like slogging through a depressing, endless, marsh. ( )

I just couldn't quite bring myself to give this 5 stars. I loved the format of this book in switching between telling the story of one day in from the past (24 years earlier) as well as a story from what is happening in the present - trying to really figure out what happened that day 24 years ago. Flipping between these two perspectives kept me on my toes for the most part.

I also didn't quite see "it" coming up til the moment was on top of me, so to speak. The way Gillian Flynn is able to create such grotesque and haunting(ly beautiful) scenes never ceases to amaze me.

With all this being said, there were still parts of this story that I felt myself dragging through and I just wanted Libby to "get over it" because the way she was acting after all these years seemed if not necessarily over the top, then at least like time should have numbed the pain and experience. I've never lost someone in that way, but it just felt to me like it shouldn't have lasted that long and so some parts felt both dragged out and repetitive.

I still lived this because Gillian Flynn is awesome, but this wasn't my favorite. ( )

“I have a meanness inside me, real as an organ. Slit me at my belly and it might slide out, meaty and dark, drop on the floor so you could stomp on it. It’s the Day blood. Something’s wrong with it. I was never a good little girl, and I got worse after the murders.”
“I was not a lovable child, and I’d grown into a deeply unlovable adult. Draw a picture of my soul, and it’d be a scribble with fangs.”
