First published in 1973 - and followed by Volume II in 1976 and Volume III in 1980 - this anthology has assumed classic status in the field of Egyptology and portrays the remarkable evolution of the literary forms of one of the world's earliest civilizations. Volume I outlines the early and gradual evolution of Egyptian literary genres, including biographical and historical inscriptions carved on stone, the various classes of literary works written with pen on papyrus, and the mortuary literature that focuses on life after death. Introduced with a new foreword by Antonio Loprieno.Volume II shows the culmination of these literary genres within the single period known as the New Kingdom (1550-1080 B.C.). With a new foreword by Hans-W. Fischer-Elfert.Volume III spans the last millennium of Pharaonic civilization, from the tenth century B.C. to the beginning of the Christian era. This is a supplemental textbook from a course that I regretted taking for my Master's degree. I was required to take 10 hours outside of my area of concentration (modern history) and I thought, Egypt, boy, that would be fun! NOT! Of course, I always bought ALL the books, much like now, thinking I would read them all. NOT! And I'm taking a DNF on this 872 page book. I've read 200 pages and I'm done! My favorite, which still was not good, was "From Instructions of Ptah-hotep", which were instructions from the mayor of the city, Vizier Ptahhotep, on social etiquette and laws. He also expounds on being virtuous in all relationships. Some great advice, "Conceal your heart, control your mouth." Hoping to sell on Amazon, although prospects don't look good! Will keep around for another week and then off it goes! ( )

Difficult to read in a sitting. I think this would be better to dip in and out of...but I don't read books that way. *shrug* ( )

“Death is before me today
Like a sick man’s recovery,
Like going outdoors after confinement.
Death is before me today
Like the fragrance of myrrh,
Like sitting under sail on breeze day.
Death is before me today
Like the fragrance of lotus.
Like sitting on the shore of drunkenness.
Death is before me today
Like a well-trodden way,
Like a man’s coming home from warfare.
Death is before me today
Like the clearing of the sky.
As when a man discovers what he ignored. Death is before me today
Like a man’s longing to see his home
When he has spent many years in captivity”
