Sheriff Woody is one of the toys in little Andy’s collection. The toys come to life when humans are not around and interact with each other. Andy gets a new toy, Buzz Lightyear, for his birthday which replaces Woody as his favorite toy, making Woody jealous of Buzz. The pair don’t like each other and end up getting away from Andy and into the hands of an evil kid, Sid. Despite their animosity, they form an alliance to save themselves from Sid and become best friends. Once they were able to overcome their differences, they saved themselves and found themselves back into Andy’s room where they belonged.
Personal Reaction:
I love and have always loved Toy Story because of my connection to Woody- seeing as my last name is Woody. But, it’s not only the characters that to me are special but also the story in Toy Story. This is first a movie that the book purely stems from. The book takes the most important parts from the movie and brings them to words that will be easy for kids who are starting to read to comprehend and understand. For me, Toy Story brings back childhood and memories of my childhood toys.
Classroom Extension Ideas:
1) Have students draw out their favorite toy and have the student present their drawing and why their favorite toy is special to the class.
2) Discuss with the class about how Woody bullied Buzz before he got to know him. Ask them if they have had any friends where they might have thought differently about someone before they got to know them and discuss how we shouldn’t judge people. ( )
