A dangerous psychopath has taken over Berlin's leading radio station and is holding everyone inside hostage in the terrifying and twisted new thriller from Sebastian Fitzek. 'Good morning. It's 7.35 AM. And you're listening to your biggest nightmare.' This morning a dangerous psychopath is playing an old game with new rules. He's taken six people hostage at Berlin's leading radio station. Every hour, a telephone will ring somewhere in Berlin. Maybe it will be in your house. Or your office. And if you pick up and answer with the new slogan, then a hostage will be set free. Sounds fair, doesn't it? Renowned police psychologist Ira Samin is rushed to the scene, where she is forced to negotiate live on air. With the nation listening, the kidnapper makes his sole demand: find his fiancée and bring her to the station. But she is dead. Burnt to a crisp in a devastating car accident eight months ago. Facing an impossible demand and a police commander who won't reveal the truth, Ira must race against the clock to resolve one of the hardest negotiations of her career. All the while, somewhere in the city... a telephone is ringing.… (mais)

Jan May takes several people hostage in a Berlin radio station. They bring in Ira Samin as hostage negotiator and their conversations are aired live on the radio for millions to hear. His request is simple, he wants to see his fiancée Leoni. Only she was killed in a car accident some 8 months ago. He, however, is convinced that she is still alive and until they bring her to him he will play a game every hour, he will call a random number and if they pick up with a specific phrase, he will release a hostage, if not he will shoot one of the hostages.

Ira does not take his story and explanations seriously, until she receives some information from the head of the radio station, Diesel, and she starts to wonder about some discrepancies she can’t explain in the autopsy report and pictures of the car crash.

Meanwhile the Berlin SEK (the special response unit) is divided, some think Jan is harmless and he did not and will not kill, others that he is indeed dangerous. The author keeps us wondering too whether there really might be something going and where this will end as she does not receive any support from her superiors and they want to break into the studio and take him out. This was a good book with a nice mix of lies and plotting and it kept me guessing until the end how all of it fit exactly. ( )
