Sophie Beckett never dreamed she'd be able to sneak into Lady Bridgerton's famed masquerade ball—or that "Prince Charming" would be waiting there for her! Though the daughter of an earl, Sophie has been relegated to the role of servant by her disdainful stepmother. But now, spinning in the strong arms of the debonair and devastatingly handsome Benedict Bridgerton, she feels like royalty. Alas, she knows all enchantments must end when the clock strikes midnight. Who was that extraordinary woman? Ever since that magical night, a radiant vision in silver has blinded Benedict to the attractions of any other—except, perhaps, this alluring and oddly familiar beauty dressed in housemaid's garb whom he feels compelled to rescue from a most disagreeable situation. He has sworn to find and wed his mystery miss, but this breathtaking maid makes him weak with wanting her. Yet, if he offers her his heart, will Benedict sacrifice his only chance for a fairy tale love?… (mais)

It’s summer, the weather is fine, the water in my pool has 34°C (roughly 93F) and I’m exhausted from work. Nevertheless, my holidays are nearing (two weeks from now!) and I’m slowly getting into “Summer Reading Mode”.

That means that I prefer easy, quick-to-read novels that simply amuse me and, thus, I was only too happy to take up on “An Offer From a Gentleman” in which Sophie Beckett, a late earl’s daughter - born out of wedlock, though - captures the heart of Benedict Bridgerton - and vice versa.

There’s not much to be said about this specific book; it’s more or less a Cinderella story. A fluffy fairy tale in which everyone gets what they deserve. You don’t read this for philosophical depths or “enlightenment”.

If you read this book, you do it purely for entertainment; it’s the literary equivalent of candyfloss, a TV romcom or a soap opera.

If that’s what you’re in the mood for, you can hardly go wrong with this book.

Although… If you ponder reading this third book in this series, you know perfectly well what to expect anyway: It’s more of the same in a good way.

Four swooning stars out of five.

P.S.: Yes, he blackmails her. Yes, he asks her to become his mistress. Since it’s inherently consistent with the fictitious universe of “Bridgertons” I choose to suspend my moral indignation.

Third in the Bridgerton series, this concentrates on the second son, Benedict, This is the Bridgerton version of Cinderella, right down to the 2 not so ugly step sisters and abusive step mother, sneaking into a ball having to run out by midnight. But in this version Cinderella is not so easily found and it takes years and lots of "chemistry" to get the 2 together ( )

I LOVED the fairy tale aspect of this one and I really hope there are similar "themes" in some of the upcoming installments. The third book focuses on Sophie Beckett, the bastard of an earl who was horribly mistreated after his untimely death. Being forced to act as a maidservant to her stepmother and stepsisters is unbearable and one night the other servants convince her to dress up and sneak to masquerade ball where she meets the man of her dreams, Benedict Bridgerton. She doesn't even know who he is but they are both captivated by each other. She flees at midnight and doesn't encounter him until years later. Her circumstances haven't improved much and he doesn't recognize her. But is there a spark of interest. Could a member of the ton have feelings for a lowly servant girl? Fun, witty, and sexy. Give me more please! ( )

A wonderful entry in the Bridgertons series. Honestly some of these books are not fantastic -- I loved the Netflix version of The Duke and I (first season of Bridgertons) but did not love that book. Some of the books are a ton of fun though, and this one absolutely worked for me. I loved Sophie and Benedict both. A lot of the complaints in other comments about Benedict being imperious struck me as silly. Of course he is imperious, he has never not gotten what he wanted. He does though learn to understand his privilege and to see others' experiences are different. He knows he was an ass, and he changes. Its sweet. The second epilogue was a bit of a bore, but the book itself was fun and exciting and dreamy. I did the audiobook and it was for me a great way to wind down and fall asleep at the end of some stressful days. ( )
