Biography & Autobiography. Nonfiction. HTML:MORE THAN EIGHT YEARS ON THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER LIST

The extraordinary, one-of-a-kind, "nothing short of spectacular" (Entertainment Weekly) memoir from one of the world's most gifted storytellers.
/> The Glass Castle is a remarkable memoir of resilience and redemption, and a revelatory look into a family at once deeply dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant. When sober, Jeannette's brilliant and charismatic father captured his children's imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Her mother was a free spirit who abhorred the idea of domesticity and didn't want the responsibility of raising a family.

The Walls children learned to take care of themselves. They fed, clothed, and protected one another, and eventually found their way to New York. Their parents followed them, choosing to be homeless even as their children prospered.

The Glass Castle is truly astonishingâ??a memoir permeated by the intense love of a peculiar but loyal family.

The memoir was also made into a major motion picture from Lionsgate in 2017 starring Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson, and Naomi Wat… (mais)

I didn't find this as interesting as others have. Hard for me to get invested, the only reason I pushed through was the high approvals of others who read it. Don't need it, wouldn't recommend. ( )

This was a really intriguing read. I liked that Walls wrote without much introspection and focused on writing what actually happened, according to her memory.

There were many parts of her childhood that sounded downright fun, but I just can't get over her parents' irresponsibility and subversive priorities.

The complacency regarding sexual abuse was what horrified me the most. After reporting to her mother that her uncle had groped her while he masturbated, Jeannette's mother has more sympathy for the uncle than her daughter, saying that her uncle is just lonely. She goes on to tell her daughter:

"... sexual assault [is] a crime of perception. If you don't think you're hurt, then you aren't. So many women make such a big deal out of these things. But you're stronger than that." (p.184)

Unfortunately, this was not the only incidence of sexual abuse recorded in the book, but every time, her parents glossed over it and acted like it was not wrong at all. ( )

What a story!! And to come out of that childhood as a functioning adult is a miracle. I was incredibly angry with the parents (especially the mother) as I read Jeannette's story. ( )

Read for a graduate seminar on Story and Memoir at CU Boulder.

Blown away by the simple, clean prose in this memoir, written in the narrative nonfiction style that is quickly making its way up in the nonfiction world! Walls manages to tell the complicated story of her relationship with her father through a series of stories about her unusual upbringing. One of the best memoirs I've read in the last year, I'd absolutely recommend giving it a go! ( )

''The Glass Castle'' falls short of being art, but it's a very good memoir. At one point, describing her early literary tastes, Walls mentions that ''my favorite books all involved people dealing with hardships.'' And she has succeeded in doing what most writers set out to do -- to write the kind of book they themselves most want to read.
