Richard Kadrey has officially become one of my favorite authors. Sandman Slim is sometimes witty, often dirty, but always a pleasure. Whether you're in the streets of LA or the dark shadows of Hell, Kadrey's writing will take you on a wild ride through the life of Sandman Slim, the monster you just can't help but love. ( )
This book was good. A nice addition to the urban paranormal field. It had a few areas that I thought were not handled as well as I would have liked. Sometimes I felt that it tried to hard to be funny. A few dings here and there keeping it from a five but I will read the next one. ( )
Sometimes, you just feel like reading some daft 80's-action-movie pulp about a ferocious badass who's come back into town to get sweet revenge on the scum that killed his girl. This thing is basically Sin City with demons and angels and gangster magicians. Bullets dipped in holy water and vampire succubi trying to go cold turkey on murder. Throw in some hardboiled detective noir and a little John Woo, blend and serve with a double shot of Jack Daniels.
It's daft as it sounds, but great fun. Everyone needs a little tasty junk in their diet occasionally. ( )
Sandman Slim was a book that, along with three of its sequels, had been sitting on my bookshelf for ages. I finally picked it up in March and just finished it (I had a slow reading month, what can I say) in April. I really liked this, a lot. The dark comic tone that mixed humour with horror is great and reminded me of work by the likes of Chuck Wendig and early Chris Holm stuff. I am eager to read more in this series soon. Very cool. ( )
It's the kind of book where suffering and slim hopes are the reality for almost all the characters, and where goals are not achieved without the kind of sacrifice and revelation that change people's lives forever. And by the standards of that kind of book, Sandman Slim is very, very good indeed.
