'We will shortly be landing at Los Angeles International Airport. Please ensure your seat is in the upright position, that you weigh less than a hundred pounds and that you have excellent teeth.' Unlike the rest of her family, Maggie Walsh has always done everything right. Sensibly. By the book. Until the day she leaves her husband and runs away to Hollywood, that is. In LA the primping, preening and partying are non-stop and even the palm trees are skinny. Staying with her best friend Emily, a struggling screenwriter, Maggie starts doing things she's never done before. Like wearing tights on her head, mixing with film stars - even pitching scripts to studios - and much, much more. Including meeting the mysterious Troy, a man so non-stick he's known as Human Teflon. Follow Maggie on a journey of discovery, from suburbia to a suntan, taking in some heartache and lots of Martinis along the way, as she discovers what she really wants in life and why she really walked out of her marriage . . .… (mais)

While this was an initially interesting book, the whole background of Maggie's abortions and such just did nothing for me. I quickly grew tired of her time in LA (short though it was) floundering--esp at her age. She seemed pretty immature for someone who had been married for 9 yrs. Would not recommend. ( )

On the surface of it glamour girl Charly Metcalfe finally has it all. She's officially a W.A.G, having bagged premiership footballer Joel Baldy to be her boyfriend - and she has the lifestyle to go along with the title. She lives in a million-pound penthouse. She gets invited to the most glamorous parties, and Joel will buy her anything she wants.

But behind closed doors, life as a footballer's other half isn't as perfect as it seems. Joel has a temper and when he and Charly argue he lets his fists do the talking. Charly knows she should get out but there's one problem...she loves him. In fact she loves him enough to marry him in spite of their problems - and her own family's objections. But having married in haste, is Charly going to regret her decision all too quickly...?

Just discovered my review for this book. (It seems to me it is more of a letter than a review lol)

On Friday, June 01, 2007 I wrote about this book on bookcrossing

This book has not been rated.
Karine!!!!!!!!!! OMG. Ask gizzy but this is so wonderful.
Vaguely in my mind I thought that someone owed me a Marian Keyes book but checking shauney's site I could not find it. Why was I looking there?

Well I loved Rachel's Holiday and a few weeks ago I noticed She had published a new book, also about the Walsh sisters.
I immediately added it to my wish list.
Lat week I discovered that there were more books written about the Walsh sisters. The first one I discovered was Angels and the next day I also realised Watermelon is also part of the series.

Anyways, I was looking on online sites cause I wanted to buy the books. I had just added Anybody out there in my shopping basket and Angels on my wish list :) when the postman rang. he brought me a package. A RABCK from Giz. Inside? Anybody out there.
It was so funny. Then I was able on that same day to buy Watermelon secondhand and it arrived the next day.
Immediately started to read Watermelon (another great book!) and am watching Angels on Ebay.

Guess I can remove that auction now. (It was too expensive anyways)
I am on a Marian Keyes reading frenzy so great timing!!

Thanks for the little note and Bonjour or Au Revoir
(You see I still talk as much :-) )

I liked this book but not as much as the other Marian Keyes books.
Maybe it was bad timing. (Read this in 2007) I think it was cause I had problems with every book. Could not find the piece of mind to read. I remember that.

Update september 27 2015. I left all the typos and errors)

Maggie, who narrates this book, has always appeared to be calm and well-behaved. She has a good job and is happily married... or so it seems. Except that something has gone wrong, and so she suddenly decides to leave her husband and fly out to the USA to see a close friend who lives in California.

Maggie gradually gets drawn into the strangely fake materialistic culture she finds herself in, learning the language of Hollywood, spending vast amounts of money on her appearance, and even experimenting with new relationships. It could have been sordid, but somehow stops short. The writing is good, the characters sympathetic, and as Maggie's past unfolds in her memories and conversations, everything falls into place.

Some bad language, but even that didn't seem entirely out of place. Caricatured minor characters add a little humour, and all in all I found it a satisfying and enjoyable book. Decidedly chick-lit, but with plenty to think about too. ( )

Like chick lit only deeper, serious themes/issues plus a great set of friends and family. ( )
