I'd say this is a 3.5 stars. I enjoyed this book for the most part, but it did take me awhile to finish. It was a fun read while I read it, but when I put it down it didn't haunt me, calling me back to it like a really good read usually does. I did enjoy it enough though to make plans to finish the series but it's not super high on my reading list of priorities.

What I liked about the book was of course the steampunk genre. The living airships were amazing. They fasinated me in everyway. It was a bit genius. The machines were very interesting as well but held a note of familiarity which made them just a touch less facinating. The book was told from two different view points Deryn's and Alek's which I actually liked cause it kept everything fresh and different. I also like the way of speaking. I could hear it in my head as a read and I love it. Expecially Deryn, who was my favorite character.

What I didn't like was, as I said before, the fact that the book was really rememberable when I wasn't reading. I don't know why not? It has everything that it should have to be a favorite for me and yet I don't feel it. There was a lot of war. While I know some like those books, I don't. So that was a suck it up and power through issue. ( )

I was impressed with Westerfield's creativity, with this "alternate history" (steampunk) novel. Prince Aleksander, a son of Archduke Ferdinand Hapsburg is smuggled away after his poisoning. The German-Austrian world is technologically advanced, and the son is stashed away in the mountains. Meanwhile a girl, masquerading as a boy to enter the army, is stationed on a living airship, part of the Darwinian cross-breeding that permeates the English world. Their two paths cross as the airship is shot down in the same mountains. Good illustrations too. ( )

Two stories diverges then turn into one towards the end. I like the end but hate the build up. If anything the sequel maybe better because the characters has been build up. ( )

While this was a fun read, it didn't captivate me. I had a difficult time with the jargon - both having to do with air flights as well as creatures/machines created that didn't actually exist at any point in history. It was difficult to envision what was being talked about especially in relation to the creatures that were created and being "flown" in. I didn't feel like I was invested in the characters or the story unfortunately. I love historical fiction books and this was a good steam punk version of the beginning of World War I. I don't think I'll be continuing on in the trilogy.

Such a cool book. You learn a bit of history in with the awesome fight scenes and Deryns crazy antics. Also has a lot of very cool sounding ships and . . . it has PICTURES!!!! ( )

The novel is a study in opposites, of boy versus girl, working class versus aristocracy, British versus German, and its overlying thematic division of Darwinists and Clankers gives all of these a distinctive torque, while avoiding mapping neatly to any specific agenda. The novel’s concluding set piece features a grand, elegant and very satisfying hybridization that suggests that opposites can meet, collapse and mingle, and that this story has natural sequels, which I will undoubtedly read.

Westerfeld writes gripping, relentless coming-of-age novels that are equally enjoyable by boys and girls, adults and kids, and Leviathan is no exception. I'm looking forward to volume two -- and many more to come.
