This book is made 10 times more interesting with the pictures! The writing is a bit dry, giving facts about redwoods but the pictures show a story of a young boy reading about redwoods and getting so immersed that he finds himself walking the forest and seeing new trees sprout out of stumps and how the redwoods measure up to the statue of liberty and a city skyline. A great pick for a kid who wants to know facts, is interested in trees/forests, or perhaps is doing a project on California! All of the information is true and the author gives a note at the end about how to protect redwoods.

A child finds a book-- this book-- on a city train and is mentally transported to the California Redwoods, where he learns about the ancient trees and their relationships in the forest. I learned interesting facts, enjoyed the illustrations, and really badly missed being about to go to a park to see giant sequoias that to do this day, continue to feel like something out of fantasy. I really enjoyed reading Redwoods by Jason Chin for many reasons. The thing I loved most about the book was definitely the illustrations. They were extremely representative of the text and also enhanced the story. One thing about the illustrations that I really liked was that the child was holding the book, Redwoods. I feel like this made the book much more personal and relatable because it's as if the boy in the book and the reader are learning about redwoods together. Another aspect I really like about the book was how much information was packed into the childrens book. The way the book was written was not overwhelming at all, so I feel like it is really able to engage students and teach them information. While this is not exactly about specific aspects of the book itself, something else I really like about Redwoods is the author, Jason Chin. After doing research about him for a project, I learned so much about him. Something that I learned that I found very interesting and impressive is that he does extensive research for his books and goes to the settings of all his books. By visiting the redwoods and learning a lot about them himself, it is obvious that the information in the book is detailed and accurate. Overall, I loved reading Redwoods by Jason Chin. ( )

Top 100 pick because:

-Exquisite rendering of the redwood trees and the child's journey through the pages of a book about them.
-I am surprised this book is categorized as fiction (at least it is within my library system). I wonder how much is not true, or if the nature of the illustrations disqualified it.
-I learned quite a bit about redwood trees and it wasn't too technical or dry.
-Jason Chin's popularity is now understandable. While this is my favorite of his books, I've liked all of the 6 or 7 I've now read. ( )

This book is really interesting and i think the author did a really good job including scientific information about the Redwood forests alongside really amazing illustrations. The book explains a lot about the growth of redwood trees, the animals and plants that live around them, and the characteristics of these trees. Considering that we are in Oregon, I thought this would be a really cool book to read especially if students had the opportunity to visit the Redwood forests. I would probably use this book as a part of a unit on habitats or plant life. This book has a lot of really interesting facts that I think students would be really intrigued by, so I would definitely read this book to students in 3rd-5th grade. ( )
