Pete and Kat were incredible together and they had some pretty serious baggage to bring to their story, which is ALWAYS a very good thing in my book. Their dynamic always kept you on your toes thinking if that was the time when everything was going to be alright between them and they would live happily ever after. It was very refreshing to me that their past and present problems didn't get some kind of closure right at the beginning of the story, but the plot was very developed and made everything that much sweeter in the end. Antiquities dealer Peter Kauffman walked a fine line between clean and corrupt for years. And then he met the woman who changed his life-Egyptologist Katherine Meyer. Their love affair burned white-hot in Egypt, until the day Pete's lies and half-truths caught up with him. After that, their relationship imploded, Kat walked out, and before Pete could find her to make things right, he heard she'd died in a car bomb. Six years later, the woman Pete thought he'd lost for good is suddenly back. The lies this time aren't just his, though. The only way he and Kat will find the truth and evade a killer out for revenge is to work together-as long as they don't find themselves burned by the heat each thought was stolen long ago... Series Note: Although the characters in the books are connected, there is no ongoing storyline so the books can be read as stand alones.
Six years ago, when Peter Kaufmann, a dealer in ancient artifacts, first met Egyptologist Katherine Meyer, he didn’t always play by the rules. Their intense attraction and romance encouraged him to take a different path, but the change came too late with devastating consequences. Now Kat has literally returned from the dead and with her the secrets and lies that could lead both Pete and her to their deaths, or perhaps, open the door to their future. Which will it be?
Much of the book is related in flashback to Kat and Pete’s first meeting and affair in Egypt. These chapters are interspersed among the current day chapters, which may pull some readers out of the story. For me, they served to enhance the slow build up of Kat and Pete’s second chances romance as they reveal the intensity of their past relationship and strengthen their current bond. It is through the intermingling of these flashbacks that readers see who Kat and Pete were in the past and how they have grown into the people they are today - a more mature couple capable of deeper love and forgiveness.
The suspense plot is complex with numerous characters with their own agendas. It is difficult keeping track of them all but the action is exciting and the resolution satisfying.
All in all, an enjoyable read and recommended for those who enjoy second chance romances. Hailey and Shane’s book is up next. ( )
