One of the most personal and powerful acts a Christian can engage in is prayer. Yet many believers struggle with their prayer lives, wondering whether they are really making a difference and how they can be more effective. Delving deep into the biblical understanding of prayer, beloved author and leader Derek Prince shows readers the secret to leading a dynamic prayer life, how to receive what they ask for, and how to align themselves with the heart of God. One of the things I learned was the distinction he makes between thanking God (for more personal goods, if you like, for good things that happen to us), and praising him, (for more impersonal goods, for good things that have happened in the world). I used to keep a gratitude journal, but I discontinued it because I’d only let myself write about personal goods, which ended up making me feel like a failed memoirist; I just wasn’t that interested in what I wrote because I’d only let myself refer vaguely to thoughts and ideas. Now I know that I can praise God for more abstract things, as well as thank him for that peanut butter and banana sandwich. Thank you, Mr. Prince!

…. (Not that you can’t be absorbed in, and grateful for, things as well as ideas.)

…. One thing that I wished he had dealt with in more detail (I’m sure there’s always more with something like prayer) is intercession, specifically the motivation to intercede. A lot of times we don’t intercede, most commonly probably because we lack the mercy (C’mon God, ten minutes I’m on this mountain and they build an idol—destroy them!), but not uncommonly because we lack a certain chutzpah with the mercy—if you’re just afraid of God or just in awe of his judgment on the nations, he tells you Sodom’s going down and you’re just like Wow! I’m in awe! Am I going down too?

…. Anyway I don’t always agree with every point, but it wouldn’t be worth it to multiply points about what could be wrong. At least there is content; it’s not a book of right-wing swearing and such.

…. I wonder if I flatter myself that dieting and keeping a food log can be considered a form of fasting. Certainly I think not being overweight is a good floor to put under something like that.

I will read this book at least once a year. Derek was, in my opinion, one of greatest Bible teachers this world has ever known. My love for the Word has been enhanced through his teaching. He not only teaches what the Bible says, he teaches how to apply it. He has challenged me to memorize scripture more, to believe God more, and to pray more, especially for our nations and leaders. Examines the teachings of Jesus Christ and scripture from the Old Testament to better understand biblical prayer, and describes the purpose of prayer, how to pray with confidence, intercessory prayer, and how to know if prayers will be answered.
