After serving a two-year sentence for crimes committed after being drugged by persons unknown, Mason Perry is out to solve a high profile murder so she will be reinstated as a detective. Teaming up with a former civil defense, now corporate lawyer (and her sister, DC's chief of police), they take on a shady group of spies battling terrorism using unlawful means. ( )

David Baldacci has long been a very competent writer of political thriller fiction, but the recent few books I have read have really rubbed me the wrong way and now I start to wonder if all his books are this stupid.

True Blue is about Mace Perry, an ex-cop in prison for bank robbery, though she does not stay in prison for long and she is determined to clear her name. Being in Washington D.C., every crime has a political angle and it is clear that someone powerful is pulling on strings to make her life harder.

From the start, the book is an implausible story of heroism, utter stupidity and good writing. Because Baldacci is good at writing a story flow that makes you read just one more page, despite everything being, well, stupid (I have a way with words too, right).

I enjoyed this stand-alone novel but would agree it's not one of David Baldacci's best novels. I believe the reader must first accept (only during the reading of the novel) that a police officer just released from prison can be present at a crime scene.

I hope that "True Blue" is not anyone's only selection in reading novels authored by David Baldacci. ( )

I first picked up True Blue because I have greatly enjoyed several of David Baldacci’s other books, particularly those in the Camel Club series. But this book was not quite the right recipe to get me involved.

First, I had some difficulty forming a mental picture of some of the characters. Take the main character, Mace Perry, for example. Mace is 30-something years old but reminisces about days as a point guard on a high school basketball team. If you are thinking Mace is a somewhat pathetic, middle-aged man still stuck in his glory days of high school, you would be wrong. Mace is a woman, who worked her way up in the DC police force to detective to work undercover on some of the meanest streets in America. Then, she spends two years in prison because she was framed for a crime. And she still recalls her playing days? There were enough discontinuities in the traits and behaviors of some of these characters that they never felt real to me.

I also had some difficulty with the general plot. First, even in the author’s synopsis of the book, you can probably tell that most of the problems Mace will face are self-generated. I tend to have some difficulty when a character keeps generating the problems they are trying to fix. Why not just stop generating them? But the general theme of True Blue is even somewhat harder for me to swallow. Mace supposedly holds law enforcement in such high regard that she would do anything to get back on the force. And this includes breaking the law, over and over and over again. And she gets others to do the same. Somehow, it seems to have the same sort of logic as ‘fighting for peace’. How could anyone with this kind of reverence for law enforcement have so little regard for the law? And the suggestion that ‘this was the only way’ seemed too easy. She did not try anything else.

Clearly, I got caught up in what seemed to me to be strange juxtapositions of characteristics and motivations, and so, never really got immersed in this book.

"True Blue" is an absorbing thriller with a powerful message, but readers are most likely to remember it for its superbly appealing protagonist. Perry is smart and street-tough, and her eye for the telling detail in an investigation is unerring. Let's hope she appears in a new Baldacci title soon. From a reader's perspective, it could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Baldacci deftly ties [the] storylines together with a well-written and complex plot that will keep readers guessing at every turn. Hopefully, Mace and Roy will have an opportunity to turn up in a future Baldacci novel, as he has truly created some thoroughly engaging characters his fans will want to see more of.
