The road back to bestsellerdom can be deadly. Holmes & Moriarity, Book 1 Thanks to an elderly spinster sleuth and her ingenious cat, Christopher Holmes has enjoyed a celebrated career as a bestselling mystery writer. Until now. Sales are down and his new editor is allergic to geriatric gumshoes. On the advice of his agent, he reinvents his fortyish, frumpy, recently dumped self into the sleek, sexy image of a literary lion, and heads for a Northern California writers' conference to try and resurrect his career. A career nearly as dead as the body he stumbles over in the woods. In a weirdly deja vu replay of one of his own novels, he finds himself stranded in an isolated lodge full of frightened women-and not a lawman in sight. Except for J.X. Moriarity, former cop and bestselling novelist. The man with whom he shared a one-night stand-okay, maybe three-long ago. The man who wants to arrest him for murder. A ruthless, stalking killer, or a hot, handsome ex-lover. Which poses the greater danger? It's elementary, my dear Holmes Warning: This book contains a washed-out bridge, an isolated hunting lodge, desperate writers, guilty secrets, a killer on the loose, and one very hot ex-cop who wants his former lover in handcuffs-for all the wrong reasons "… (mais)

Christopher (Kit) Holmes is grumpily off to a writers' retreat/conference that winds up being cut off from civilization and is still hurting from the pain of his (allegedly) committed partner running off with his personal assistant. And he is in a slump with his somewhat stodgy (but brilliant) mystery series. Enter a former potential partner. Followed by the first murder. Followed by EVERYONE accusing him of the murders. And it's all wrapped up in the funniest dialog EVER! I loved it and already bought the others in series.
Voice actor Kevin R. Free is perfectly attuned to the main characters and makes a fun read spectacular! ( )

The popularity of his cozy mystery series declining, Kit Holmes is persuaded by his agent to go to a writers' retreat/workshop to pitch a new series to his former editor. Arriving during a storm he finds a body in the grounds of the lodge. He investigates with an old flame in order to keep them both out of jail.

A quick, fun read, probably indistinguishable from her others after a couple of days ( )

I am a BIG, BIG Josh Lanyon fan as most of you have probably figured out by now. This series is going to be as good as everything else she has written. There's just enough lightheartedness to keep the story from being too dark and heavy for those that are not fans of blood and gore, but yet the details of the killings are all there. The two main characters balance each other well. Kit is the one who generally leaps without looking, though he's well aware he should and as a result he doesn't always land on his feel. JX is the more level-headed one, offering stability to the story that gives him emotions that Kit doesn't possess. The way they feel for each other, even after a decade apart is absolutely perfect. and heartwarming. Their world is very real and engaging. It’s a story with likeable, warm and lovable, characters. They may not necessarily be made from the stuff of heroes, but they will win their way into your heart merely by their fallibility. ( )

This was...OK. I went with the the belief that the author was poking slight fun at the traditional set-up, rather than seriously trying to redo it, which helps. Certain things then become humor rather than failure to use common sense. The main character is pretty whiny, but very believable. Liked seeing someone the north side of 40 still being shown as being vital and attractive to their partner (despite efforts from younger characters to paint him as over the hill). Would've liked deeper characters all the way around, but it's a pretty short book, so most of the people other than the couple were simply "types". ( )

Christopher Holmes is a bestselling author who's seen better days. His mystery series--featuring an elderly woman and her cat--isn't as popular as it used to be. His agent is encouraging him to think of something new. At her urging, he agrees to attend a writers' workshop, and he expects it to be uneventful. But when he finds a dead body upon his arrival, he knows it will be no ordinary weekend. Add to it all that J.X. Moriarty, an old one-night stand and fellow author, just happens to be at the same retreat, and Christopher finds himself well over his head.

This is an interesting attempt at the Agatha Christie motif. It's such a clear reference that it pretty much screams it with the characters referencing the tropes in their discussions. But it doesn't quite hold the same level of intrigue one can expect from Christie. It also comes across as a bit forced and cliche that a mystery writer happens upon a mystery.

The characters are interesting, though. There are a few twists here to keep readers engaged. And it's a rather easy read. So this still garners a decent rating and recommendation from me. ( )
