Badly written, pedestrian plot, characters that exist only to die horribly. I only just found the willpower to finish it. A real shame as I've enjoyed some of his other books. ( ) I know it is not fair to this book but I was extremely disappointed in it. I gave it a 3 stars because it was well written. To be fair my disappointment was all in expectations. I was expecting something else and basically got an average thriller. I should have done a little research before buying. Didn't realize it was one of his older books and definitely didn't realize what it was actually about. This book was a raw, brutal, visceral experience in the best way. I was utterly captivated by Crouch's ability to paint such a vivid picture of life in an 1800s mining town. Reading about Abandon of old made me infinitely grateful to live in today's modern era with all its amenities: central heating, running water, women's rights. Crouch has an uncanny skill when it comes to painting pictures with words--especially the gruesome, gory, and bone-chilling. I loved the short chapters and the fast pace and ended up staying awake way past my regular bedtime on a few occasions because I was desperate to find out what happened next. The story continues to haunt me, long after I've turned the last page. .25 stars for the blurb on the back of the book. The book itself gets a zero. I only read this because I needed something to read at work. My biggest issue: the writing. It was barely mediocre. And because it was that bad everything else tanked. Not that the characters were interesting. Everyone existed just to be killed. I swear. Meet a character, a few pages later they die. And if you're going to kill nearly everyone, just go on and kill everyone. This book could also have been half the length it was. And the switching back and forth was so pointless. Leave us in the dark for some things. It makes for a better read. And there was just too much going on that was unnecessary and had no purpose. And for being extremely detailed for most of the book the ending was sure rushed. I mean, really. On trial for murder and then found not guilty? It was too pat. I suppose this was supposed to be horror but it felt like a sixth grade attempt that failed pathetically. sem crÃticas | adicionar uma crÃtica
