Pixu: The Mark of Evil sets out to be dark and disturbing. It's a tale about a group of people, linked by the darkness overtaking them, and all headed for certain destruction. In theory, that sounds like a story that I'd be all over. In practice, it's very odd and more than a little confusing. While I thought that the art in Pixu: The Mark of Evil was a little rough, I actually did end up liking it after a while. It sets the stage for malice and mystery. The problem with this graphic novel lies mostly in the story itself. It is terribly disjointed. There's no time to fully understand where any one person in this story is actually coming from, and so reading this is like holding on to a piece of driftwood in a rough current. Only that piece of driftwood keeps getting smaller and smaller. There's nothing to cling to. That's my spiel. I think this was a great idea, it just needed more polish. A dark mark scribbled on the walls of an apartment building infects its inhabitants and turn their lives into a living (and dying) nightmare. I've read other works by the artists and those are some of the best comics I've read, but this one doesn't quite work for me. The drawings are creepy enough, but the story doesn't really get concluded very well, or at all in fact. Unfortunately, I can't recommend this one for anyone other than people who are already fans of the writers and/or artists.
Pixu cleaves to the horror genre’s conventions. Its sources of revulsion aren’t terribly original—violent slaughter, mental possession, obsession with cleanliness to the point of self-mutilation, betrayal by loved ones—and its dialogue is terse, reheated melodrama....But this is also horror art. The story is mostly an opportunity for the cartoonists to cut loose from the comforts of straightforward representation.
This gripping tale of urban horror follows the lives of five lonely tenants -- strangers -- whose lives become intertwined when they discover a dark mark scrawled on the walls of their building. The horror sprouts quite innocently from a small seed and finds life as something otherworldly, damaged, full of love, hate, fear, and power. As the walls come alive, everyone is slowly driven mad -- defenseless against the evil in the building, stripped of free will, leaving only confusion, chaos, and eventual death.
