It’s Not Summer Without You is the second novel in the The Summer I Turned Pretty trilogy by Jenny Han. Plot: Belly was supposed to be happy this summer, after finally connecting with Conrad in the way she always hoped they would. But her relationship with Conrad was short-lived, and now Belly is facing a summer not only without Conrad, but also without Susannah and the beach house. But then Conrad disappears from campus and his brother Jeremiah comes to Belly for help with tracking him down and bringing him to his senses. And where else would he be than at the beach house? It’s Not Summer Without You hits just the spot you’d hope it would: a light beach read with enough emotional drama and fluid writing to keep the pages flying past you. Read more on my blog: https://kalafudra.com/2023/03/08/its-not-summer-without-you-jenny-han/ I wasn't sure if the first book was the kind of book that could deal with a sequel, but I was riveted by this book and enjoyed seeing the characters growing. The loss of an important character proves very telling for the rest. Everyone deals with grief in different ways and it's intriguing to see how they all change and how their relationships between each other evolve following this loss. It all feels very real, not at all faked. I loved Belly in this book a lot more than the previous. She's immature, but she can see this, and I could really see her struggling to grow up and to deal with the circumstances. Her more rash actions were plausible and I loved the way she thought about things later and grew from them. As a YA character, she was quite plausible. Belly doesn't feel quite content with her school friends and with being at home for summer--she's always felt like she really lives at the beach house. The moments that made this clear were the most powerful to me because I understand what it's like to have different worlds and to miss one profusely. Han did a great job of capturing this sentiment. I'm entirely unsure what I want to happen in the third book, but I'm excited to read it. This book captivated me more than the first and I recommend it. FROM AMAZON: Can summer be truly summer without Cousins Beach? It used to be that Belly counted the days until summer, until she was back at Cousins Beach with Conrad and Jeremiah. But not this year. Not after Susannah got sick again and Conrad stopped caring. Everything that was right and good has fallen apart, leaving Belly wishing summer would never come. But when Jeremiah calls saying Conrad has disappeared, Belly knows what she must do to make things right again. And it can only happen back at the beach house, the three of them together, the way things used to be. If this summer really and truly is the last summer, it should end the way it started—at Cousins Beach.
5 out of 5 stars!!! I loved this continuation of Belly's story! Especially with getting to read some of Jeremiah's point-of-view! With the way the author left the book I think there will be another one, I hope, and I can't wait to see what that "a couple years later" part was about and who with!! Maybe we'll even get to read a bit from Conrad since he is one very moody character I'm curious as to what he's really thinking about. In truth ... I like both brothers and I can't make up my mind as to which one I want Belly to be with. In some ways I wish she could just have them both ... but I know it's not that kind of story either. LOL. This was a great story about the meaning of friendship, how sometimes that friendship can evolve into something more, what brothers or even best friends will do for one another, losing a person who meant quite a bit to you, and the power of teenage romance -- what's true about it and what we just want to see in rose colored glasses. Conrad, who I think is supposed to be our dream man, really seems to have no redeeming qualities at all.
This series seems to reinforce all the worst things about crushes and toxic relationships. ( )
