"They call it Deadtown: the city's quarantined section for its inhuman and undead residents. Most humans stay far from its borders-- but Victory Vaughn, Boston's only professional demon slayer, isn't exactly human. Vicky's demanding job keeping the city safe from all manner of monsters is one reason her relationship with workaholic lawyer (and werewolf) Alexander Kane is in constant limbo. Throw in a foolhardy zombie apprentice, a mysterious demon-plagued client, and a suspicious research facility that's taken an unwelcome interest in her family, and Vicky's love life has as much of a pulse as Deadtown's citizens. But now Vicky's got bigger things to worry about. The Hellion who murdered her father ten years ago has somehow broken through Boston's magical protections. The Hellion is a ruthless force of destruction with a personal grudge against Vicky, and she's the only one who can stop the demon before it destroys the city and everyone in it" -- from author's web site.… (mais)

Victory Vaughn is a shapeshifter and demon killer. She might be the last of her kind if her young niece doesn't inherit shapeshifting which her sister really hopes she won't.

After a plague hit Boston and turned most of the citizens into zombies, the human government created an enclave called Deadtown for the inhuman and undead residents. Since then, residents have been fighting for their rights which is a real uphill battle.

Vicky's sometime boyfriend Kane is a werewolf lawyer really concerned about winning rights for all inhuman and undead residents. Currently, Massachusetts is one of the few US States were residents of Deadtown have some limited rights. The current race for governor could change that as the leading candidate is extremely opposed to any more rights and freedoms for people he calls "monsters."

Vicky is more concerned about making a living than politics. She is hired by the haunted wealthy to rid their dreams of various demons that cause nightmares. However when helping her latest client who happens to be a gangster and a supporter of the anti-inhuman governor candidate, she encounters the demon who killed her father and marked her.

She learns that the demon has been bound by a human sorcerer. It makes Vicky determined to find the demon and send it back to hell and to find the sorcerer too.

There is another problem too. A fanatic human scientist wants to study Vicky and her family and goes so far as to kidnap Vicky's ten-year-old niece. Since it isn't certain that the niece is human or like Vicky, human law is taking a wait-and-see approach leaving the rescue to Vicky and one police officer who is one her side.

This was an engaging and entertaining urban fantasy story with an interesting main character. I enjoyed this story which begins a series. ( )

Better than I'd feared. The first chapter or two were questionable, but it sucked me in as I tried to figure out the geography of Deadtown, and I ended up enjoying it. The world is a little full, but she sticks to the usual supernatural rules, overall, so it's not hard to follow, just full. ( )

I unfairly judged this book by its cover before reading it. Lucky for me, I liked it anyway!

Good pacing, interesting new fantastical elements, and just enough romance.

I was a bit annoyed at how many different plot elements there seemed to be, but they tied together nicely, even if predictably. ( )

How can you not like the book that starts with the phrase "And then there were zombies" ?
The book was unique and a very good read. It was fun. I look forward to reading the next one. ( )

The writing was good. The end bit, the last 100 pages or so were very good. But, I was never very attached to Victory, so I just didn't care that much. Her relationship with Kane was odd & a bit lame. Neither her zombie side kick, nor her vampire roommate were terribly endearing either. Her sister was a bit of a bitch, and the fact that her relationship with Maria was left up in the air unsatisfying. This book was just okay for me... ( )
