Is it really possible to love one's enemies? This question sparked a fascinating and, at times, terrifying journey into the heart of the Middle East during the summer of 2008. It began in Egypt, passed beneath the high-rises of Saudi Arabia, then through the bullet-pocked alleyways of Beirut and dusty streets of Damascus, before ending at the cradle of the world's three major religions: Jerusalem. Join novelist Ted Dekker and Middle East expert Carl Medearis in every rocky cab ride, late-night border crossing, and back-room conversation as they sit down one-on-one with some of the most notorious leaders of the Arab world--real people with emotions, fears, and hopes of their own. Along the way, Dekker and Medearis discover surprising answers and even more surprising questions that they could not have anticipated--questions that lead straight to the heart of Middle Eastern conflict.--From publisher description.… (mais)

While a good travelogue, I did expect a bit more from Dekker. He tended to repeat himself a lot and really didn't gain a lot of insight from his interviewees. Also, his recounting of some of the history of the region was off the mark; his explanation of theological differences and blatant dismissal of such differences was unfortunate. The saving grace of this book was that it did help give context to the parable of the Good Samaritan, especially the story of Nicole interwoven throughout the main narrative. I would recommend this as a decent read, but only after noting the above observations. ( )

Overall a readable book that chronicles the authors journeys through the turbulent middle east including the strongholds of the Hezbollah. Lebanon (Beirut, Baalbek), Syria, Jerusalem, Bethlehem and expertly woven into this is the saga of a Palestinian American who travels to Beirut to discover her roots and her biological father making this a book that would belong in the Travel-Mystery genre.
