Gettin' Even - I don't know is this author is as good as getting inside boys' heads as she is girls', but I stopped worrying about it a few seconds after I started reading this story and got completely caught up in it.

Don't Read This - This story is written in diary format, and fans of Glimpse by Carol Lynch Williams will like it.

Stories and poems for teens about black boys: Tow-Kaye is 16 and getting cold feet about his marriage to Cindella. Malik is attracted to his 30-something neighbor and she to him. Tyler is a playa but can't keep from being drawn to Celeste. A boy contemplates suicide after his twin brother kills himself. The poems celebrate pretty girls and a baby sister, and reveal the inner boys no one sees. ( )

Good book but i don't think it will have broad appeal for boys. Too much emotion, discussion of feelings, poetry and not enough action. Girls who liked Who Am I Without Him will probably like this one too - a look at the other side of the coin. ( )

4Q 4P (My rating and VOYA's) Short stories and poems bring together a cast of characters as real as any. These snapshots of urban life deal with some hard-hitting issues like teen pregnancy, suicide, abuse, and HIV, but are also filled with hope, humor, and what it means to be a man today.

I appreciate books like this that deal with real issues in a real way. I don’t feel that there is enough books getting published that will speak to African American male teens, so it is exciting when one does, and is done as well as Flake’s book always are. I think that teens always appreciate books that about them and for them, and there is such an expanse of experience in these stories and poems that most will find something that they can relate to.
