Hard to review this one, which I understand to be the first book in Parkinson's Promises to Keep series. Parkinson does a wonderful job capturing farm life of the time period. It is very easy to visualize the setting and I learned a lot about the history and geography of the area, including gender roles and the differences between rural and town life. As we get to know young Amy (she is only 16 years old by the time we reach the end of book 1), it is easy to see experiences through her eyes and her dreams of a different life. As a character, Amy is okay but I always tend to struggle with young, naive characters. I forget that I was young once (and probably just as naive), so I blame the reader, not the author, for not being able to have me feel any connection with Amy. I found the story to be overly long. it could have done with some polish through professional editing. That being said, the writing style is straightforward and very accessible. The story just didn't grab my attention enough for me to want to continue with the series. ( )

Review: Sentence of Marriage by Shayne Parkinson.

I found this historical fiction novel captivating and the reality feeling that many young girls have found themselves in this topic throughout the years. The setting was in New Zealand in the 1880’s. The writing was great and the characters feel into their roles to give the story a sense of reality. I don’t feel it should be categorized as a romance because the type of story sends messages to young coming-of-age teens to think of the consequences of their behavior, about family life, rural living, caring, and responsibility.

I do believe the main character, Amy was very young and naïve and found out the hard way of a young girls life. The story starts off with Amy who lives on a farm at the age of fifteen with her father and two older brothers. Amy’s mother was deceased and Amy was in charge of the house until one day her father came home from some business trip with a wife, Susannah who was not accustom to living on a farm away from any city life. Her attitude soon showed her bitterness especially when she discovers that living on a farm means getting up early, cooking meals and daily chores like taking rugs outside to beat the dirt out of them. Soon she is pregnant and demands attention all the time which left Amy with most of the chores within the house. As the story unfolds nobody likes Susannah, there was a lot of arguing among the family because their new step-mom was demanding and overbearing.

Than Susannah’s twenty-year-old brother James, came to spend the summer with them and settled in and helped with some of the farm chores. After James introduction to the story Amy’s whole life turns to secrets and turmoil…. ( )

It's been over two months since I read this series. It's taken me that long to gather my thoughts for the review. There's just so much to say! This was the first book I've read by this author, but she's become one of my favorites. We're introduced to Amy, a young teen living on a farm in 1860's New Zealand with her father and two older brothers. She has aspirations of becoming a teacher and loves to read books. Her mother died when she was young and her father returns from a trip with a new wife, introducing her as their new "mother." Let's just say Susannah lacks basic nurturing qualities and is the most self-centered character I've read to date.

The family conflicts and emotions were spot on. We get a feel for life on a farm, the backbreaking labor involved and just how difficult it was for women back in that time period. Real tidbits of history are blended into the stories (throughout the series) making for a very realistic experience.

If you're looking for lighthearted read, have issues with abuse, or the outright chauvinism and cookie cutter mold that women of that era were forced to accept, then this book probably isn't for you. However, it is a book that sucked me in to reading a very long (but worthwhile) series. It made me love certain characters and hate...yes, HATE...a few others.

But I couldn't put it down.

I wanted to throw my Nook, screamed in my head for Amy to wise up, and dreamt of strangling Susannah and her azzhat brother with my bare hands.

I still couldn't put it down.

I was so attached to Amy and her father (after I forgave him), Lizzie's family, and Frank (who we learn more about in the next two books and oh, what a gem he is) that I had to keep reading! The author states Frank was inspired by her real life husband...lucky woman! I grew to love these families, cheered them on through their struggles and contemplated revenge scenarios for others. I cried like a baby over Amy's heartbreaks and shattered dreams.

And still, I couldn't put it down.

These books were self-published from what I understand and considering the sheer amount of writing, that in itself was a monumental task. Each book starts where the previous one left off. There were some areas where unnecessary dialogue bogged down the pace, especially in the second and third books, but I kept reading.

This was one of those rare series that will stay with me for a long, long time. ( )

As I'm sure that I have mentioned before, so many novels follow a rote formula... Beautiful woman meets handsome man. They fall in love. A misunderstanding or circumstances draw them apart. They are miraculously reunited at the last moment, and they live their happily ever after fairy tale life.

This formula sells books. We seek an escape from the difficult and mundane lives that we live. It is the rare author that writes a novel that doesn't wrap up so prettily. A novel that shows just how wretched life can really be. Shayne Parkinson is one of those rare authors.

I "purchased" this novel for free at the Kindle store. I have found some wonderful authors that way. I loved this book so much that it was hard to keep my nose out of it. I finished it and then purchased the remaining books in the series as I was so drawn in that I needed to know the whole story right away. If you love a book that goes outside the tried and true formula then I bet you will fall in love with Parkinson's books as I have.

In Sentence of Marriage I am reminded of my children who are still young enough and naive enough to believe that life should be fair. Well I am afraid that it is not. Sometimes good and trusting people, which our protagonist Amy is, get trampled in life. Sometimes a persons story is incredibly difficult, sad, raw. This novel touches the heart and emotions at a very deep level.

This is not a feel good novel but it is an extremely great novel and well worth reading. Even better...Parkinson offers it for free!
