Computational biology applies the power of computers to large, complex mathematical problems arising in molecular biology, especially in DNA sequencing. Setubal and Meidanis provide an overview of algorithms for computational biology as well as basic information regarding major problems. This book has it all ... a well worded philosophy; easily read and understood directions -- along with pictures that make sense; and it faciliates myriad timeless methods of having fun, creating, self-discovery, self-expression, and self-confidence.

My copy is dog-eared and worn with yellowing pages ... yet I wouldn't give it up for the world. One of the prefacing pages states succinctly why I am so enamoured with this book:
"Ask Questions
Experiment in safety
Learn by doing
Believe in yourself"

Both this and volume 2 are available used, while a new edition (currently in print) titled "The Best of Making Things: A Hand Book of Creative Discovery (listed under the name Ann Sayre Wiseman) is available from numerous sources online.

I highly recommend all three, even in this year of 2009. (
