And when his patient, elderly sweet shop owner, Ivy Churchill, passes on after succumbing to cancer, he decides that marrying Ivy’s niece, Emma, would be a sensible thing to do. He understands that Emma is still in love with the town’s bad boy, Dean Ratchitt, even after he betrayed her with another woman, but he decides love is not necessary for a marriage to succeed.
