Kurze Inhaltsangabe Man konnte nun wirklich meinen, Laurence Passmore habe sich sein Leben recht nett eingerichtet: Zugegeben, er ist so gut wie kahl, und sein Spitzname ist ›Tubby‹ (= Dickerchen), aber seine Villa in Rummidge, sein Job als erfolgreicher TV-Sitcom-Autor und sein vitales Sexualleben mit seiner langjährigen Ehefrau Sally machen diese Schönheitsfehler locker wett. Könnte man meinen. Doch Laurence fehlt ein Stück zum Glück: Zufriedenheit und Seelenruhe. Zur Pflege seiner seelischen und körperlichen Wehwehchen geht Tubby montags zur Physiotherapie, dienstags zur kognitiven Verhaltenstherapie und freitags abwechselnd zur Aromatherapie und Akupunktur, doch keine der Therapien will so recht anschlagen. Angst, sagt seine langjährige platonische Liebe, sei der Schlüssel, den er suchen und zu dem er das passende Schloss finden müsse. Auf seiner Suche stolpert Laurence über jugendliche Penner, durch Klatschspalten und verschiedenste Betten und Schlafzimmer auf Teneriffa, in Beverly Hills, Kopenhagen und Galizien. Sein Heil findet er schließlich bei Kierkegaard und bei seiner ersten Liebe in Süd-London.

Dans ce livre plein d'humour et de second degré David LODGE alterne les formes pour raconter la vie de son personnage qui part à vau-l'eau. Laurence Passmore (le personnage principal) écrit ainsi à la première personne son journal : par ce biais, le lecteur aborde les évènements à travers la propre vision du héros qui reconnaît avec humour ses propres névroses. La force comique du livre tient aussi à la partie du récit racontée toujours à la première personne mais par d'autres personnages qui entourent le personnage principal du roman. Une autre vision des évènements nous est ainsi offerte. La trame du roman n'est pas particulièrement originale (des difficultés dans la vie professionnelle et personnelle du personnage, la quête d'un amour perdu...) mais cela est largement compensé par l'écriture moderne et rythmée de David LODGE.
