Paranormalcy
(Paranormalcy #1)
by Kiersten White
Young adult books are not my favorite books but occasionally I find some true gems and this is one of them. I find that most YA books I try are like chewing bubble gum when I am really craving a seven course meal, they just aren't filling, lack flavor and nutrition! But this book had great characters, very unique and well developed characters that YA and adults alike would like. Good plot, good banter and language that fit the teen language, original fantasy which is difficult in any age group, and I was never bored. Yes, I could tell it was still a YA but yeah, that's what it was made for! Clean, which suites me just fine, and I would be willing to follow this series! All adds up to a good read! A splash of romance for those that enjoy that stuff, and boom!
A pretty darn good YA fantasy novel! ( )

I really loved this whole series. It was not what I expected to be, and I was happy to find books that included many different mythical creatures. They were well written with a cute love story. ( )

I finished the book at 3 in the bleeping morning. Haha.
It's one of the books I can't quite put down when I start reading it.
It's a light read for a paranormal fiction genre and I simply adore it. These days I want to read something light but when I open a book about high school or college drama (Let's not specify, though) I just couldn't get it through my head. Like, goodness, I'm so tired of drama .

And for once the heroine in this book isn't as humble (read: pretentious) as other heroines which totally can't see that they're beautiful or something ( Well, except for Rose Hathaway, I love that one, too.)

I'm thinking it's odd that I just read this book, just now. I never heard it before. No one ever recommend it to me. I just saw the third book "Endlessly" here in goodreads.

About the heroine:
I love that she loves pink. Like she's not the too-cool-for-school (or in this case, pink, rather) type.
And I like the fact that she's fascinated by little things like lockers and driver's license.
And she knows that she looks good, for a change. I really hate it when the heroine (or any real person, for that matter) is too humble about how they looks like.
And she's witty, all of them are. Well, it's good, though. I won't like her to be witless, would I? That would be so boring.
And she's funny, I really appreciate good sense of humor.

About the book:
Cover:
I love it. It's gorgeous and blah blah blah haha.
But seriously, it's lovely. It's just that I can't imagine Evie as that girl in the cover. She loves pink and she's too girly to look like that. I pictured her like the story did tell us blond, flat and have eyes like melting snow. And she's pretty. Okay. Just not what the girl in the cover looks like.

Way of Writing:
I'm very picky on reading books. When I finished a chapter with a yawn. I'll never finish another chapter again. I finished the whole book, what can I say? :)

Author:
After reading a book, I don't rate just the book but it's author as well.
I'm picky, remember. And once I read a book and love the way it's written I jump at the next book s/he wrote.

So that.

I have all the three books and I'm looking forward to reading all of them. ( )

Absolutely amazing! I love how, even though she's surrounded by all the supernatural stuff, Evie still manages to act like a teenage girl. I can't wait to read more from Kiersten White! ( )

Great debut novel for a new paranormal series; I've been waiting for one as original, smart, fun, and suspenseful as this.

Evie is anything but an average teenager, even though that's all she wants to be. But she isn't paranormal...instead, she's the most valuable human asset of the International Paranormal Containment Agency. Her job is to track, tag, and control paranormals, and her ability to see through any glamour gives her a unique edge. But when a shapeshifter invades the Institute, the crafty faeries start acting even stranger than usual, and something starts murdering paranormals, Evie may learn that even she isn't as normal as she thinks.

The first person narration was great, something that few authors are able to achieve. I really loved all the characters, especially the main players: Evie and her tough yet 'ordinary' voice, and snarky shapeshifter Lend and his many faces and bodies. I was also pleasantly surprised that their relationship built so sweetly and naturally. But the minor characters were just as awesome, and creative to boot. Reth, Lend's dad, and Raquel stand out as really well-written.

It's wonderful to see the twists and jabs the author took with the usual paranormal species, sometimes to the point of witty and humorous tongue-in-cheek. It was especially great to see the faeries being cast with new facets that are far less cliche and sugarcoated than most current fantasy novels. And the book also pulls no punches; I was surprised by some of the heavy stuff that happened, and it has a nice take on the 'black and white' nature of controlling and protecting paranormals.

Ending on a great note that definitely promises a sequel but doesn't leave you with an unbearable cliffhanger, Paranormalcy will hopefully only be the start of Evie's adventures.
