Seventeen-year-old Evie O'Neill is thrilled when she is exiled from small-town Ohio to New York City in 1926, even when a rash of occult-based murders thrusts Evie and her uncle, curator of The Museum of American Folklore, Superstition, and the Occult, into the thick of the investigation.
The Diviners is well researched and competently written, but it's a meandering, bloated slog of a read. The novel should be 300 pages shorter than it is. There are frequent small sections that are from characters who otherwise have nothing to do with the plot that were likely included because they'll feature more in later novels. However, having so many of them and so many small interruptions added serious length and boredom to the book. The Diviners also suffered from a serious case of over description. Instead of lending a mysterious atmosphere as I think was intended, it makes the book feel unfocused. Readers who love the 20s and Jazz age New York will probably enjoy some of that more than I did. The concept is great and there were definitely enjoyable parts of the book, but overall it wasn't for me. ( )
Scary! Seriously scary. Beautifully researched, as always with Libba Bray. Lots of cliffhangers, plenty of mystery, great cast of characters. There's a lot going on in this book, and I am very curious to find out how it will all meld in the rest of the series. ( )
I love this book. Some parts of the middle are a bit slow, but the story is so good! I'm very glad I got a chance to reread this. I love Theta so much, she's one of my favorite characters in any book, though there are so many great ones in this book, it's hard to choose! ( )
