I tend to read books with similar themes or concepts in close conjunction with one another, quite by accident. Last week I read [b:The Evolution of Bruno Littlemore|8109709|The Evolution of Bruno Littlemore|Benjamin Hale|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1296085316s/8109709.jpg|12904470] and this morning I read [b:Zoo|109414|Zoo|Anthony Browne|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1311978494s/109414.jpg|105442], both which highlight humankind's arrogance and abuse of beasts. Last night I read [b:Smith|361423|Smith|Leon Garfield|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1312005366s/361423.jpg|2451112] and today I read this book, both which feature young urchins of noble character surviving the streets of big cities.

With its theme of survival, and a similar reading level, I'd like to see this taught together with [b:Hatchet|50|Hatchet (Hatchet, #1)|Gary Paulsen|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1156871821s/50.jpg|1158125], already a staple in many grade 5 classrooms.

I love the insights in this. A woman warns Slake of the scary bad guys on the subway, and Slake wonders Were these not the very same people... who walked on the street above?"

Upon thinking some more, I realize that all the books I mention here have a certain theme in common. All make us think about what it means to be one's self when one is on one's own, vs what it means to one's self when in company of, and accountable to, others." ( )

A powerful book about being a neglected child, told in such an interesting way that I forgot how sorry I felt for the kid and just got wrapped up in the story. ( )

I disliked the style of narration, couldn't relate to the character, and thought the ending was super cheesy. ( )
