This is a story of how one person, Cesar Chavez helped to change the life of migrant farm workers. This book explains what motivated Cesar to seek change and how the National Farm Workers Association was created. This book covers the longest protest march in the history of the United States, along with the initial march that was the first step in changing the lives of migrant workers everywhere. The beautiful artwork throughout the picture book helps children to understand the plight of the migrant farmers. I personally found this book to be inspirational. The way it explains how Cesar managed to force change without using violence shows that change can happen peacefully. This book is great for History and English. ( )

Cesar Chavez didn't like the way his people were treated and decided to take action to have equal rights. He led a march with many of his people. He was successful in getting them fair and equal treatment. I really liked this book and how the message was clear to never give up and that even when it seems hard or impossible, that if you push hard, it will happen. He made a huge impact in so many peoples lives. ( )

The story of Cesar Chavez is an important story for children of all ages to read. Most do not even know who Cesar Chavez was or that he took a non-violent approach to ending the injustice of his people working in the grape vineyards of California. Although Chavez was joined by only 67 field workers at first, eventually thousands joined in a march all the way to Sacramento. ( )

Harvesting Hope. The story of Cesar Chavez. Written by Kathleen Krull in 2003. It is a 48 page multicultural picture book.

This is a story of Cesar Chavez and his attempt to a peacefully change the way migrant farm workers were treated; to improve working conditions; and to increase pay. Cesar Chavez created the National Farm Workers Association. In 1965 he organized a strike and a march to draw awareness and to improve working conditions for migrant farm workers. The march covered 300 miles and consisted of 10,000 people, with 57 people walking the entire journey. It ended in Sacramento, CA where Cesar Chavez signed the first contract for farm workers in American history. The contract include higher pay and better working conditions. Cesar Chavez is credited for improving farm workers working conditions without the use of violence, although many responding to him and his cause with acts of violence. The book is beautifully illustrated by Yuyi Morales and received the Pura Belpre Honor Book Award. I chose this book because my school is 85% Hispanic/Latino with a high population of migrant students. I think many of my students may have heard their parents speaking of Cesar Chavez since some are farm workers. In addition Cesar Chavez has local ties with the valley as he has organized marches here. On Library Thing it has a 4.2 out of 5 star rating. ( )

Before reading this book I had no idea who Cesar Chavez was. I had never heard of him, but I came to find out that he was a big civil rights leader. He fought for better wages and worker's rights. He led a march that is considered the longest march in U.S. history. He won the battle for worker's rights with a nonviolence fight. From reading this book I learned that the United States has a long history of treating people unfairly, especially if they are a different race. I enjoyed the usage of line in the drawings. The illustartor did a wonderful job in showing emotion in each of the characters. The colors all faded togther and were earth tones. The art also showed a lot of unity between the people and flowed perfectly with the story. This book did a wonderful job of telling a memorable story about a man who should be memorable to everyone.
