Leigh Bardugo

I wanted to love this book but it reminded me so much of The Hunger Games, I ended up feeling like it lacked originality and missed many opportunities. I liked the story: girls and one boy compete in a magical competition to become the king of Spain’s magician, at a time when the Inquisition was still quite a threat to witches. The Familiar, as in the title, is the main character’s “coach” through the games. I was sad the Inquisition played such a minor role in the book. I’ve read books about the inquisition in Spain and its Jews. It’s a sad history that is worth reminding the world about now. So it’s an entertaining read but if I gave a title to my review it would be: Missed Opportunities.… (mais)

Ruin and Rising is a difficult book for me to rate. I was really interested in the series as a whole, but some parts of it fell short for me.

I liked the characters a lot more in this book. Nikolai was more likable than ever. The side characters were interesting and much more developed. I even liked Mal somewhat better, which was a surprise. Alina was kind of bland to me, though.

I liked the story, but some of the book felt drawn out and kind of boring. The ending wasn't very satisfying, but it did wrap up the story and I didn't hate it.

I like the world that Leigh Bardugo built and I'm excited to read Six of Crows soon.… (mais)
