Come along to the time of King Tutanchamon,to Pharaonic Egypt and the flourishing cultures of the Mediterranean in the 1300s BC. Here in Crete is born an unusual girl. Although the Cretan woman in a strong position at this time, but if you are so wild and headstrong as Nofret it becomes a problem - especially for the men who come in her way.

First in the Nofret series, written and illustrated by Sussi Bech.

This is where Nofret’s incredible journey across the classical world starts, including Egypt, Minoa, Mesopotamia, and more. The story sets the stage for the extended narrative developed by Bech as the series progresses. In the course of it the reader follows dramatic changes in Nofret's fortunes, from belly dancer to high priestess, even the queen of Egypt, and all the way back again.

In this first story, the reader is introduced to all the hallmarks of classic Nofret: outwitting those who would trick you and an inventive approach to the harsh realities of life. As the series progresses, the core elements of Nofret's character retain their shape while Bech's illustrations become more and more elegant. Compared to the sophisticated draughtsmanship of later instalments, these early illustrations of Nofret and her enviornment look clunky and cutesey.

Nofret is an interesting read for kids in the 10-12 age group although she could well be read and understood by much younger readers. Since she is not averse to using her feminine charms to do what a girl has to do (in this first story she is a dancer in a cheap brothel), Nofret may not sit well with some parents. When question about this aspect of her heroine's escapades, Bech's position was that Nofret is her own character and would remain so.

Whatever parents think, chances are that girls who like to skateboard and boys who like to read Prince Valiant will enjoy reading Nofret. As a reader, rather than scholar, of Nofret I have enjoyed every step of her journey all over the classical world. Favourite amongst these is Rejsen til Hatussas (The Journey to Hattusas). Her highs and lows are literally epic and Sussi Bech captures the imagination right from the beginning with the story of how Nofret escapes from a brothel in Babylon with only her guile and ingenuity to help her.

Nofret is a treat for adults as well as kids and the artistic development of Sussi Bech in the Nofret series is awe-inspiring.
