A ground breaking investigation into Napoleon Bonaparte's New World policies, with emphasis on Leclerc's expedition to Saint Domingue (Haiti). The book where I first read Volney's name. Includes Volney's three part prediction to Bonaparte why Leclerc would fail: the blacks will fight a return of slavery; yellow fever will destroy the European acclimatized troops; and the British navy will cut off communications between the island and mainland France.

The author is an avowed Marxist, so you have to be patient and read through his attempts to understand history through that lens. Despite this limitation there is great detail here about Bonaparte's New World policies which mainstream historians have (finally!) begun to recognize.… (mais)
