Janet Cardiff

This renowned Canadian duo's audio and video works and installations examine the complexity and vertiginous nature of subjectivity in a technological world, where man is caught between present and the loss of self, between memory and experience, perception and imagination. Cardiff and Miller create interactive pieces in which the visitor is invited to touch, listen, smell and move about freely. This new catalogue presents five of those works, including "Paradise Institute" and "The Forty-Part Motet," as well as three created within the last year, all documented in installation photographs and on a DVD. In 2001, VAG commisioned Janet Cadiff to produce a public artwork for the Gallery's collection. As part of a series of commissions that icludes work by Ken Lum and Kim Adams, each artist was asked to consider a the gallery's central location and the active street culture of its environs as a context for conceiving of a new work. Janet Cardiff's resulting artwork "Eyes of Laura" is the Gallery's first Internet-Based artist's project, and we are pleased to present this intriguing work as an integral part of our ongoing commitment to the use of new technologies in contemporary art.'… (mais)
