What is Love by Jen Comfort

This has made many readers happy but for me it wasn’t a good match. The book description and cover drew me in but as I started to read the first chapter, I found myself being pushed away from rather than drawn to the characters. Teddy seemed anxious and a bit of a stuffed shirt and Maxine seemed nasty, mean, and perhaps a bit of a tease. I read a few more chapters and did not become engaged so read the end and found a happy ending was in store for them but wondered how they got there so read a few chapters in the middle before giving up entirely. I wish the couple a happily ever after and the author success. Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake for the ARC. This is my honest review. (2-3 Stars)… (mais)

Quick and fun and spicy read, lots of humor and enough plot twists to keep you hooked. FMC Reggie, emotionally stunted and socially anxious (distant and demanding and cold parents), astronaut hoping to be the first woman on the moon but desperately needs to demonstrate better teamwork skills and a willingness to work well with others in order to be chosen for the mission. Offers to train out MMC Jon, a lovable and cheerful nepo-baby movie star with his own family demons, cast in an upcoming astronaut movie with a famous director and a questionable script that of course he didn't read before committing to the role. Jon is bumbling at first, and Reggie's annoyance with him and her constant underestimation of his abilities was a little annoying. But it was in-character for her, given her distrust of others and her limited ability to understand that competence could be measured outside the narrow parameters taught to her by her parents. Plus, Jon is hot with a capital H, so it seemed like she found it easy to underestimate his intelligence and ability to learn. Not to mention his struggle with attention issues. He's written with friendly golden retriever energy, which is at the extreme opposite end of Reggie's scowling "I hate everyone because I can only depend on myself" energy. Extreme grumpy-sunshine, also there's a variation on the "only one bed" trope during training at the isolated mock moon base in Arizona. I loved these two together, but it seemed like it took forever for them to meet in the middle. But then, they both had a lot of work to do on themselves first. My only complaint is that Reggie's dour personality was a bit extreme and it made it hard to warm up to her at first, even knowing why she was the way she was. It was nice to see her slowly warm up to Jon and appreciate him. I've read this author before and enjoyed her, and this was another fun read.… (mais)

Stream of consciousness ramblings of a drunken Broadway performer are BORING.

Great story for fans of the enemies to lovers trope, and it's done very well here. Nice opposites attract energy. I liked Teddy and Maxine together, and I loved how each of them complemented the other and both grew personally from their relationship. The author has a great comedic voice, and a snarky under-dog fmc is my favorite. (Next to a hot nerd, that is, which this book also has in spades!) But both characters were such fun in their own unique ways.
For most of the book I just want to give Maxine a hug and tell her to take a chance on Teddy, and tell Teddy to lighten up and be honest with Maxine. The storyline events keep you guessing until the end, which was a delight. New-to-me author, I'll definitely be reading more of her books!… (mais)
