I enjoyed Out of the Ashes: A Story of Recovery and Hope by Sallie Crotty much more than I expected. I was never bored. The author pulled me right into her experience.

Crotty’s willingness and courage to expose her illness for all to see is inspiring. She skillfully expressed what was happening to her emotionally, mentally, and physically during her episodes. Her self-awareness of what she was doing with her toes and fingers in response to what was happening around her wowed me.

The author was fortunate to be able to afford treatment, have unconditional family support, know how to navigate insurance, and desire to obtain a “mental health diagnosis”. Crotty acknowledges that she had an opportunity that most of the population doesn’t have, and I admire her commitment to helping others that aren’t as fortunate.

I encourage anyone to read this book to better understand that bipolar disease and treatment are unique to each individual, and for anyone who needs the inspiration to be vulnerable to build a more fulfilling life.
