This is basically rubbish, but really quite entertaining and readable rubbish. As the cover so subtly hints, it's an Alien rip off (actually, kind of a rip off of the 1980 Italian Alien rip off 'Alien 2: Sulla Terra' as the action takes place on Earth and largely underground). The characters are one dimensional and blur into one, but it kept me turning that virtual pages and the action is fun.

Great monster romp based on an original idea that is fun if taken at face value. What if some of the rocks that we have brought back from the moon contained the eggs of really big nasty ferocious venom dripping lizard-like homocidal and HUNGRY creatures that would hatch years later and terrorize the world?--or maybe just an isolated mine in Texas, but you get the drift.

Cue the screaming Saturday matinee children.

How did the embryos survive all of these years? Don't know. Don't care. How did these eggs get on the moon and why did we find no evidence of adult specimens? Don't know. Don't care. Why do all aliens look like lizards? Stop. Just stop.

Seriously, Bryan Dunn did a good job with this one. First off, it is well written in a B-movie style. Secondly, confining the action to a small area (mostly an abandoned cave and mine) and focusing more on suspense than relentless bloodshed helped ratchet up the tension and kept the story well contained and enjoyable. Consider this an homage to those great creature feature movies we loved as kids, blast through this in an afternoon or evening, and have a good time doing it.

I did like most of the story, the characters were well developed, and the writing was good. And it was an easy read. However, I only gave it a rating of 3, for these reasons:

-- The ending just kind of popped out of nowhere, and wasn't very satisfying.

-- There were too many similarities between the book and the movie Tremors. And Tremors was so much better.

-- I don't think I'll ever want to read it again (which is a criteria I have for ratings of 4 or 5).

A true monster story that took place in Newfoundland. It was interesting and the ending was definitely a surprise! This was a free ebook in 2014
