This collection of short stories breaks ground in speculative fiction in the way its forebears, science fiction and fantasy, did decades ago. We need stories like this now, stories that project the environmental future and help us to think about and navigate its myriad possibilities. The stories in this anthology are unsettling, but with sparks of hope. I was particularly drawn to the ones involving animals, our unacquiescing companions on this hell-in-a-handbasket journey we're on. So a special shout out to "The Doorman", by Jennifer Morales; "A Seal's Song", by Tomas Baiza; "Glacial Bear" by Jennifer Meeker and "Morse Code of the Yellow Rail", by Kristin Thiel. I was also pleased that a writer I admire, Tara M. Williams, has a story included here that will make you think differently about ice.… (mais)
