Fascinating information and engagingly written, but the organization was a little weak. It lacks a central conclusion—was it supposed to be that despite its seemingly rational underpinnings, the Enlightenment was subject to occult ideas? That's rather vague. It needs more definition.

These comments refer to the section on Witness, the only book of the four discussed which I have read. Fleming, a Professor Emeritus of Literature whose wife is an Episcopalian priest, brings a perspective beyond the political to Chambers' powerful and disturbing biography. He makes a distinction between the book and the man which other writers on Chambers seem to find an impossible task, noting Chambers' literary erudition and stylistic sophistication as also evidenced in his journalism. I look forward to reading the rest of the book.
Update: Chapter on Darkness at Noon equally engrossing. Discussion of the response of the French intelligentsia to the novel is masterly in its selection of telling examples.

Sorry, this should be a better book. Just short biographies of several Enlightenment-era occult-types. Little to no context, reasoning, etc. There remains to be a book on this topic that can provide those things.
