Renato Guttuso (1911–1987)

Four writers each contribute an essay: Renato Guttuso’s Journey by Maurizio Calvesi; Seeing Red by Sarah Whitfield; A “Pioneer Painter” by James Hyman; Italians, Tell Your Story: Guttuso Among the Men of Letters by Massimo Onofri. Following the section of plates and the catalogue of works is an illustrated biography, list of exhibitions and bibliography; there is no index.

Well illustrated, of Guttuso’s paintings there are 58 pull page colour plates, plus a further 50 or more monochrome reproductions of his drawings, mostly full page. In addition there is a catalogue of the artist’s work illustrated with monochrome thumbnails. There are also some monochrome reproductions of the work of other artists, and a number of monochrome photographs of Guttuso. Gusttuso’s work is bold, full of energy and often freely painted; predominantly figurative or representational, he occasionally veers towards semi-abstract.
