The books subtitle 'A musical biography' accurately indicates the approach of this particular biography, and how it relates to the other great Berlioz biographies. Holoman is the man for this approach: he has made an extensive study of the musical practice of Berlioz, scrutinizing his manuscripts and analyzing the compositions. The book is illustrated with lots of musical examples, and although the theoretical paragraphs are sometimes hard to follow for non-musicologists they always manage to give an idea of what Berlioz was actually trying to do - and why he was so often misunderstood by his contemporaries.

The book has two kinds of chapter: the first kind narrates the life of Berlioz in the light of the society he lived in. The second kind, called 'portraits', goes deeper into his personal, musica life, with detailed analyses of his works.

Finally the book is marvelously printed and bound.
