Normally I would give a book like this one star but the author can write, he is just completely incapable of telling a story or at least this story if there actually was one wasn’t worth telling it took 5 days to get to page 100 and it felt like I should have been on page 2000.
I would love for someone who has read this book to tell me what in the world it was ultimately about.
Here is what I did learn in 100 pages
The book takes place in New Orleans pre Katrina.
Nat owns the restaurant he has worked at since high school
Nat is adopted
Nat’s birth mother is a feminist professor
Nat’s restaurant staff is almost entirely gay or lesbian except Nick who is short for his age has an enormous penis that he flashes all over the kitchen and his penis talks.
Nat is on his second wife.
Nat’s first wife went from being bi when he was married to full lesbian now.
Throughout both marriages Nat has had a mistress Nat doesn’t see a problem with this. The mistress Sandra has her own set of issues:
Nat’s kids are odd.
Then the other story being told involves Willie
Will is a exceptionally smart 12 year old African American child. He experiences racism in New Orleans
Bart is a drunk white man who is I think an old friend of Nat’s or maybe a friend of Nat’s mother or both.
Wille is racist against white people
Will gets paid to buy vodka for Bart and to listen to the poem Bart is writing, but doesn’t care except for the money.
There may be more but I don’t remember.

A novel of such subtle power that you never realise you've been gone until tears or laughter bring you back. Humanity, integrity, passion and a noir humour combine to deliver an empathetic tour de force. What can I say - I liked it so much I republished it.
