Mollie Katzen, renowned author of The Moosewood Cookbook, and educator Ann Henderson bring the grown-up world of real cooking to a child's level. Children as young as three years old and as old as eight become head chef while an adult serves as guide and helper. Extensively classroom- and home-tested, these recipes are designed to inspire an early appreciation for creative, wholesome food. Just consider all that can be explored in the kitchen: counting, reading readiness, science awareness, self-confidence, patience, and, importantly, food literacy. Pizza, after all, does not come "from a telephone."

I can't remember when I first devoured The Moosewood Cookbook. However, I do remember the awe and excitement that it brought to the idea of (at that time) non-traditional cooking, and non-traditional cookbooks. What a gift - I still use many of the recipes.

This is a wonderful vegetarian cookbook. I've used it for years and love all of the recipes I have tried from there. I have many still to try, but am sure they will all be very good.

This is the ORIGINAL Moosewood, with some minor changes. My original book was stained and worn out. Molly Katzen produced one of the first and best non-meat cookbooks. The results are usually good, when you have the time to invest AND gather the LONG list of ingredients.
I learned a lot as a young cook from her cookbook. It's a classic.

This cookbook, by celebrity author Mollie Katzen, contains 20 easy to prepare, healthy recipes for kids. Contains kitchen tips, safety and behavior rules, and thoughts on what children can learn from cooking.

The Enchanted Broccoli Forest follows upon the success of Katzen’s first recipe collection, Moosewood Cookbook. All the recipes are meatless, and every one I have tried is delicious.

The book begins with “General Pantry Notes” and then moves on to Soups, Salads, Breads, Entrees, Light Meals for Nibblers, and Desserts. The “Entree” section is further divided into Quiches & Vegetable Pies, Strudel-Leaf Pastries, Enchiladas, Piroshki & Calzone, and Blinzes.

The section on baking bread is especially notable. She includes “An Illustrated Guide to the Baking of Yeasted Bread” that will answer all your questions and increase your confidence. She explains the functions of yeast and gluten, the characteristics of different types of flour, and where best to raise your dough.

This is one of my favorite cookbooks. I love the font and the artwork as much as I love the recipes.

This is one of my favorite cookbooks. I love the font and the artwork as much as I love the recipes.

The recipes are divided into Hot Soups, Chilled Soups, Salads, Sauces, Sandwiches & Spreads, Entrees, Desserts, and A Few Miscellaneous Baked Things. The emphasis is on making vegetarian meals delicious, and do they ever succeed. Some recipes I have made over and over, to rave reviews, including Spinach Ricotta Pie, “Zuccanoes” or Stuffed Zucchini, and “Delicious Corn Bread,” and Sour Cream-Orange Cake.

There is so much good to eat in these pages. The only challenge is to consume with moderation!

We lived very communally for a period and relied heavily on Mollie K's first cookbook. This one is pretty good, but somehow doesn't spark quite the same joy as the original Moosewood cookbook. Enough favourites and ideas in Enchanted broccoli keeps it on our kitchen cookbook shelf.½

This is an old standby in our kitchen. A lot of comfort food and Katzen never lets you down with inadequate directions. Sometimes I take short cuts and store a lot of the basic ingredients that form many of the foods as 'frozen starters'. The premixing and freezing taught me a lot about what can and can't be done that way (fresh herbs are a must!; don't use a self-defrosting fridge freezer as a storage option). By relying on Mollie K's cookbooks, we had much healthier dinners when everyone was burned out from their day.

A great book full of vegetarian breakfasty/brunchy deliciousness!

This book is a nice source of healthy morning recipes for your busy family, with a few ideas for entertaining. Fans of the Moosewood Cookbooks will already be familiar with Mollie Katzen's style, and it would be a great introduction for those who have not read any Moosewood cookery books.

This book includes eggs and milk products, so while it does contain some vegan recipes, be aware it is not 100% vegan.

I feel bad giving this three stars. I learned to cook with this book combined with "Joy of Cooking". Awesome starter cookbook for vegetarians but every recipe I still use has loads of penciled in revisions. Still, this book will always have a fond place in my heart.

Moosewood Cookbook 40th Anniversary Edition

I received this book from "Blogging for Books" for this review.

When I was offered an opportunity by "Blogging for Books" to review the 40th Anniversary Edition of Moosewood Cookbook I heartedly agreed! Back in the 1970 and 1980s I was a cash-strapped young wife with very little home cooking experience. I came across a paper-bound used copy of the book and scooped it up with great hopes of improving my culinary skills.

Vegetarian meals were new to me; I was a daughter of a butcher so you know that my meals were meat centered. My folks owned a small Mom & Pop grocery and I thought all vegetables came from a can, fish was frozen sticks, and stew was Dinty Moore.

There was something comforting about the cookbook. Just handling it made me feel like I was having a conversation with a friend. The handwritten format was encouraging but I have to admit that I was hesitant to fork over my small food budget to try "exotic" food (for me) like mushrooms, fresh herbs and pine nuts.

Over time the book didn't make the move to a new home; a military wife moves a lot!

Forty years later I have settled firmly into retirement. I have learned there is no fear in trying, enjoying and using fresh ingredients. I have dabbled with the vegetarian lifestyle over the years but never firmly made the "final transition" to a vegan or vegetarianism.

The moment I laid hands on this 40th Anniversary edition I felt like an old friend had shown up. The hard cover format and firm binding were such an improvement! The pages were a much heavier paper and promised to withstand splashes and accidents better.

The recipes are simple. The handwritten font still appealing to me. Winter is approaching here in the north Georgia mountains and the soup recipes are calling to me.

I read some of the reviews on Goodreads and found that more avid vegetarians thought the recipes were not spicy enough and lacked ethic authority. I wouldn't know. To me the recipes offer an opportunity to add healthy vegetables to my life and I look forward to having some great chats with an old friend that I did not have when I was much younger.

21 months - you like everything "cooking" so although we didn't cook any of these recipes we talked about them and discussed the great step by step instructions. We will borrow this book again and make some pretend soup! I love the idea of using photocopies cut up for sequencing exercises before making the recipe.

"Moosewood Cookbook Classics" is a miniature book measuring about 2.5" X 3.5". It contains 26 recipes from other Moosewood (full size) cookbooks. In this tiny version, most recipes take several pages, making the book 128 pages. This is not a cookbook I would keep in my kitchen to reference as it would be difficult to read while cooking (though the recipes are legitimate and complete), but as I enjoy miniature books, I am happy to add it to my collection.

One of my favorites, this charming cookbook is handwritten with cute drawings of vegetables throughout. Everything I've tried has been excellent, but not quick.

Every version of Moosewood cookbook I’ve had the pleasure to own is lovely. This latest edition is no exception.
As with the older version, it’s filled with handwritten recipes, most of which are easy to prepare, and creatively decorated with hand drawn artwork.

This is a good collection of vegetarian recipes from Mollie Katzen and the Moosewood Collective. Many of the original recipes from the older version of this book are present here but have been modified for healthier versions with less fat and oils.

Seeing many of my favorites I am inspired to make Gado Gado again. As it’s Thanksgiving this week I will probably put off that endeavor until the weekend.

This anniversary edition is hardback with a gorgeous golden cover, front and back. It’s a lovely book and great addition for any Moosewood fan or the vegetarian cook.

Presented in the form of a small, countertop easel, MOLLIE KATZEN’S RECIPES for SOUP offers recipes for fifty different vegetarian soups. They range from cream soups to lentil soups to assorted vegetable soups to lemon soups to gazpacho. Many of them can be made without the use of milk, as well. She also provides hints for preparing stock. The index has references for each major ingredient. If you want to use mushrooms, there are eleven listings. There are seventeen utilizing potatoes. So, if you have something that you want to use up before it spoils, you can easily find several interesting suggestions.
Each recipe looks as if it was hand-written and includes notes about substitutions, cooking times, preparation tips, etc. Each one also includes the use of herbs, often missing in many recipes. New cooks can easily follow the directions. Experienced cooks can be inspired. And Molly Katzen’s sense of humor comes through: e.g., for The Pumpkin Tureen, which can be prepared, baked, and served in a pumpkin, she writes: “Prepare the pumpkin as though you were going to make a jack-o-lantern, but stop short of carving the face.”

Mollie Katzen is a wizard! This book has some fabulous recipes. The muffins are the best you've ever tried. Yum!

This was the gift of a friend. I'm a proud carnivore and this is not a book I would ordinarily have bought myself, though I understand it's a classic among vegetarians. It's very hippie, with drawings and hand-lettering. Some of the recipes sounded too weird (Almond Soup?) but others exotically interesting (Sunflower Millet Bread). In the end, it's a cookbook that grew on me as I tried recipes and one among a handful that are keepers--even if I'm never going to give up flesh eating...

Pretend Soup by Mollie Katzen
Various recipes for kids to make. Not only are these healhy
but they are visually stimulating and they are not hard to
kids to do the making themselves. Reminds me of the time I
helped my mother in law who was in charge of the local Head
Start Nutrition for all the kids put together a recipe book
for kids to make the food. The drawings and colors and food
used is a big help. Recipes for Fruit drinks in the blender
and other foods kids will eat are included.

A fabulous vegetarian cookbook, with a diverse collection of recipes, the Moosewood Cookbook was originally published in 1977, and is an outgrowth of the Moosewood Restaurant in Ithaca, NY. Like many cookbooks, it is divided into sections, which include: Soups; Salads; Sauces and Dips; Baked Things and Sandwiches; Entrees; and Desserts. There are also some helpful introductory comments about modifications, pantry notes, tools, and conversions.

Despite the fact that I am no longer a vegetarian, I use this cook book frequently, particularly the section on soups. Although I have not tried every recipe in the book, I have yet to come across one that I didn't like. Some of my favorites include: Summer Vegetable Soup; Split Pea Soup; Lentil Soup; Balkan Cucumber Salad; Cauliflower Cheese Pie; Ukrainian Poppy Seed Cake; and Moosewood Fudge Brownies.

The recipes themselves are laid out in a sensible fashion, well organized, with clear instructions. Many of the pages are embellished with Mollie Katzen's hand-drawn decorations. This new edition also includes some color photographs. In summary: easy to use, great-tasting food... what's not to love?
