This novel gave me such redemption vibes. It took me on an emotional journey as three generations of a family (characters Margaret, Kyle, and Ally) struggled to balance their relationships with the consequences of choices made by others. It makes you really think about whether you believe someone deserves a second chance. And wow, that twisty ending! Book clubs are gonna love discussing this one.

"Motherhood is not for the weak."
So this book had some tough moments. It was structured in a before and after timeline with multiple points of view. We are able to watch Kyle struggle through his addiction and work to make himself better, for the daughter he has only mentioned in passing to his father. In the after timeline Margaret is basically consumed by her grief over Kyle’s death and wanting to know what happened. She learns about her potential grandchild and is consumed with finding her.

I think the book handled some tough topics and showed how trauma and addiction can impact so many people. However I struggled to like any of the characters in this book. Margaret it turns out has a big secret that has added to her grief. Kyle is working his hardest to be an acceptable father, but it’s not easy. However he’s the most likable character. My least favorite character was Ally’s mother. She cannot let go of how her relationship with Kyle ended and tries to keep Ally from having anything to do with him.

I felt like a lot of parts of the book were incredibly predictable. It really is a story about how far two mothers will go for their children. I felt like the ending was too wrapped up. I also thought the epilogue was supposed to be redeeming but it just made me hate a character even more. Overall it’s a good story about a mother’s love but not my favorite by any means.
