About the Author

Chris Kressner is a licensed acupuncturist and practitioner of integrative medicine. He has been interested in health and wellness since he was a kid. He earned his undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley. It was there that he was introduced to Eastern spirituality and a wide range of health mostrar mais moralities and practices, from nutrition to meditation to tai qi to kundalini yoga to massage. In his early 20's on a trip through Indonesia he contracted a tropical illness that could not be healed by Western medicine. It was this illness that made him want to examine the accepted ways of treating illness in our society. He saw massive conflicts of interest between drug companies, doctors and researchers. Chris Kressner began to study Chinese medicine as an alternative. He found acupuncture works by stimulating the body¿s highly sophisticated self-healing mechanisms. He complemented his study of acupuncture and herbs with a thorough education in functional medicine. Functional medicine is a personalized approach to health care that recognizes the biological uniqueness of each patient. As a result of his research, he has written some health book that reflect this knowledge. In 2014 his title Your Personal Paleo Code: The 3-Step Plan to Lose Weight, Reverse Disease, and Stay Fit and Healthy for Life made The New York Times Best Seller list. I’m not a doc, so this book wasn’t written for me, but I have been scoping out Kresser’s ADAPT health coach program and was looking for insights into the how and why of that program. In this book, Kresser argues for the value of his ADAPT health program and way of using functional medicine to better address the needs of patients. Worth a read if you’re a doc and are not familiar with Kresser’s work.

I'm not sure why I read another paleo based book. However, this one seems the most realistic. The author understands how restrictive paleo can be and provides strategies for how to determine what non-purist paleo food you can tolerate. These include dairy, rice, and potatoes and other whole foods. I got this from the library but will be purchasing it.

While I have read better books to get started with Paleo the second section of this book was very helpful. In this section Chris writes about rebuilding your life after you do the strict reset. Topics like, adding foods back into your diet, sleep, managing stress, making sure you get outside and how and when to exercise. These were things that I haven't seen discussed in such detail and he has some very good ideas for managing stress and getting enough sleep.

One thing I found incredibly annoying was the constant referencing of his website (sometimes as much as once a page). I don't want to stop reading to go look up a bonus chapter or a chart or something else. It's nice to have more info on the site, but you do have to register to use it and I haven't done that. I still think it's a good book, but it would have been nice to have the info in the book.… (mais)
