This is a book about a young boy growing up just before and during the beginning of the communist take-over. He was euroasian, with a Chinese father and a white mother. It was a look at the times through a different lens. The Chinese were not very tolerant of mixed race children. A good book that I would recommend.

This book is utterly captivating both for its fascinating tales and the prose written with a poetic sensibility. Gorgeous. It is a feast for both the fancy and the senses.

I use stories from this when I teach China in social studies and cross over with them to my language arts classes for a unit on foxes in literature, a unit that would take to much space to explain, but several of the tales in this book have fairy foxes in them
