I really likes the art, and it's a wonderful depiction of the world according to a child. Cool memoir.

4.25 stars - uncomfortably close to my own awkward teenage years. The last 10 pages are the best of the collection and really convey the awfulness of girls that age. I don't miss it, but it feels good to laugh at it now.

Henni is the daughter of a religious zealot mother and a father who was punished for religious dissent. While she tries to walk the straight and narrow, Henni often finds herself with lots of questions. Eventually this leads to her leaving her hometown, only to find other cities zealously following their own bizarre religions.

This was an interesting, if unusual read. The characters are all some sort of animal-human hybrid and they live in some nebulous fantasy place that has no real world-building other than there are strict religious fundamentalists in each region.

Henni's story of individualism, curiosity, and questioning could easily be relatable to many (like me), despite the otherworldliness aspects of the book. The illustrations, mainly black-and-white with some hints of blue and purple, are nicely done and fit the text well.

My only real issue with this book was it seemed to just sort of end without a clear-cut resolution. If you don't mind ambiguous endings, you'll like this book more than I did.

A very pleasant surprise considering the awful cover art of this graphic novel. In a fantastical world where tradition and religion dominate every aspect of life, Henni goes out on her own to ask questions and find her own way. A strong social commentary on religion, culture, women's roles, and more. A sophisticated and interesting graphic novel good for young adults. The artwork is odd and the characters while fantastical are very human-like which is kind of disturbing. Very much worth a read for those interested in breaking away from popular belief and asking questions of why our world operates in the ways it does.… (mais)
