Although Steven W. May's book, Queen Elizabeth I falls into the category of books you have to want to read, it's a fascinating journey nonetheless, allowing the reader a rare insight into one of the most dynamic and influential British monarchs. Literate, witty, politically adept -- all of this is clearly illustrated in her writings.

A close study of poetic activity among Elizabethan aristocrats, with brief biographies of all of the courtier poets and a selection of their works, including complete editions of the poems of the Earls of Essex and Oxenford. My review is at http://stromata.tripod.com/id85.htm
