He was born in Huntington, New York in 1971, then moved with his family to Lafayette in 1984. After receiving a B.A. in History from Tufts University in 1993, he left Boston for Podebrady, Czech Republic, where he taught English and Humanities for two years at Charles University. He then moved to Manhattan, working as restaurant critic and editorial assistant at the Zagat Restaurant Survey. He returned to Lafayette in 1996, and received his Ph.D. in Creative Writing in 2001.

Difficult to get into it at the beginning - listened to it on audio, however, glad I stuck with it - ended up liking it after all.
Good book, the storyline feels familiar, but throws in a few twists and turns so that it surprises the reader and keeps them interested.
I just love how some people are able to have such hope in such dire situations sometimes and this book capitalizes on that.
